I have a new California made D20 which I really like a lot.
I am considering ordering a new D40 as well, but I'm not sure how much
difference there is in the sound of the two.
The D20 has really opened up already - in just a matter of months.
Does any have both a new D20 and a new D40? If so, can you describe the
difference in the sound of the 2?

Don't have either, but I would expect a noticeable difference in their sound due to the difference in top wood... mahogany for the D-20 and spruce for the D-40. I have always heard that mahogany gave a "drier, woodier" tone... whatever that means!

Happy hunting!

"Whatever that means" - Right! Subjective words for sure. The D20 has plenty of top end and is very loud (because it is so light I guess).
The D40 with its spruce top I would have expected to maybe have more treble - but the D20 has so much treble that
the D40 having more is hard to imagine. There is no store near me with any new Guilds. So, I am just fishing for others' opinions.
I'm sure the 2 guitars do not sound the same, but how different they might be I have no idea.
