Guild did issue a small number of transparent black Thunderbirds. One was for sale a few years back. I would perfer that over the black paint finish.

And guys... thanks for the info on image posting sites. Its about time I add a few amateur visuals to my posts.

An update pic from Guild on FB. The smoky wasn't the final finish.

Matt Hegg, the Guild finisher who's been posting the pics on FB, posted today:
So I just got the word today. It looks like we're going to start researching what it will take to bring the t-birds back in production at guild USA.

I was pretty sure that was a color sand coat the way it was applied in the previous picture. If it was done right that old girl ought to look as slick a greased Owl Poop now!

Wonder what the motivation is for moving TBird Production to USA. It could mean higher prices and increased profit margins, could be part of America First to increase manufacturing content. Given the large number of MiK Thunderbirds out there I wouldn't expect many USA made TBirds to be sold if the price increases by much.

I doubt they’d move production. Probably just an upscale version of a very popular guitar.

Also, it looks like they're thinking about a unique triple pup version.

When Guild was promoting the 60's Polara with pre order sales early in the year they showed one version with a single pickup that looked a lot like the Mickey Mouse SC pup. The routes on white "prototype" could very well be for those pups.

The earliest versions of the '63 TBird had a full pickguard that covered the center of the body and bridge area. In contrast the later TBirds scaled back the size of the pickguard to expose the center of the guitar and foreshortened the length to avoid the bridge area. Always wanted a pickguard like that. Perfect for adding a 3rd pickup.

As an aside...the chrome surround used on the Mickey Mouse pickups will fit over the top of a typical Strat type pickup. In my youth I pulled the white Mickey Mouse pup out of a '65 Polara and installed a Dimarzio cream SD sc pup in the neck and a chrome stacked HB in the bridge. Even added a coil split switch on the bridge pup.
It was my player guitar for years...now in pieces waiting for a resurrection.
