Actually, I'm not sure that's ever been posted - at least I don't remember seeing it! Excellent photo!

I'll await identification from the experts - is it all maple?

Edit - I meant maple back and sides - a maple top would not be too appealing to Mr. Clapton...

Ah, never seen that pic either. F50. Sitka top, maple b/s. I like the G shield logo. Hans might have a good idea the year of the Guild. 50 years ago, cool.

Wow, that's kind of interesting.
I'd put that at post-'67, early-mid '68 by his hair style.
Yet I see what looks to be a shot from the same session at a Saualito hotel credited to legendary rock photographer Jim Marshall and dated as "Ca '67":
4176.jpg

I suspect that's not a correct date, going by the photo of him with Richie Havens at the Café Au-go-go in October '67, and his endorsement shoot for the '68 Guild catalog:

He had that perm for most of '67:

Here's one that looks like a couple of months after the Au Go Go pic, hair's starting to grow out:
c1289204d2cb0e5973f3c92027d70fd2.jpg

Here's a shot attributed to the Wheels Of Fire sessions which ran into '68:
fe883c8e7bd5b9659ee4defa5e5db161--cream-eric-clapton-ginger-baker.jpg

I'm willing to bet that pic's from the '68 sessions at Atlantic, as the recording sessions also included live recordings of concerts at the Fillmore West and Winterland during March of that year.
Sausalito's a little town across the Golden Gate from San Francisco.
I bet the hotel in question is the Edgewater, a popular haven for touring bands and scene of the Led Zeppelin episode immortalized in "Mud Shark" on the Mothers of Invention's Live at the Fillmore East June '71.
And I think Mr. Marshall's estate has incorrectly id'd the date of the photo session, which can be forgiven after 40-some odd years...and the operative qualifier being being "circa".
EDIT:
Ever since I first saw that photo of Richie and Eric I've had a pet hypothesis that that's where Eric actually got introduced to F50's, because:
I've never seen any reliably dated photos of him with one prior to that, but suddenly we see a flurry of 'em within 6 months afterwards....

Almost... "This shot of Eric Clapton was taken in Jim Marshall's own apartment here in San Francisco on the same occation as the Cream photo-shoot taken at the Sausalito Hotel, and used on the back cover of "The Best of Cream" album sleeve." And it was in 1967 according to the source: http://www.sfae.com/index.php?pg=304176

"The source" is wrong.
Jim Marshall isn't here to correct "the source", and I'm positive they have it wrong.
You can't find a pic of Clapton from '67 when he didn't have that perm:
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/299559812684213532

Cream was in San Francisco twice on tour, once in August '67 during which time Clapton still had a full-blown afro-type perm, the next in March '68 by which time he'd let his hair grow back out in its natural form.
Compare the shot of him with Havens in OCTOBER of '67 to the photo of Cream meeting the BeeGees in Denmark, early February '68, you can see the last vestiges of that perm:

Here's another Marshall photo offered by Christie's:
http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/eric-claptonjerry-garcia-jim-marshall-4996427-details.aspx
Note their description:
"Black and white photograph, circa late 1960s, stamped on the verso "Photograph by Jim Marshall. 8 x 10 in. (20.3 x 25.4 cm.) "
Marshall did NOT routinely list the date of the photo shoot on his prints.
THAT'S the reason the F50 photo shoot is not dated correctly.
But let's just nail it down right here.
According to this site:
http://www.angelfire.com/ca/oldtimers/TourPics.html,

When Cream played the Fillmore in August '67 and then the Whiskey in LA 3 days later the afro is unmistakably present:

Fill3.jpg

Whisky-A-Go-Go.jpg

And... hey look! By March of '68 when they returned to SF he's sporting the same hair seen in the Marshall photos with the F50:

I'm done.

OK after all that I have to confess my recollection of where exactly the Edgewater is in my first post was incorrect.
It's actually Seattle.
So one could understand why my previous outline of events in that post could be questioned.
I'm not always wrong but when I am it can be pretty spectacular.
But when I'm right it's even better.

Ever quick to jump on any excuse, I'm gonna take that as an invitation:

Hyde Park June '69; the debut concert.
No excuse needed for these great pics adorshki! Yeah...I see it now. The OP pic was definitely a younger Clapton. :highly_amused:

Oh, you liked the younger pics better?
As in fresh-faced young fodder for the industry?
Here's one I've posted before, doesn't look like the same Tele, though.
I've always thought this must have been the gig that caused Clapton to quit the Yardbirds, the garden party at Lord Willis' :

Apparently afros hadn't been invented yet in '64:

Speaking of Guild sightings, here's one of with a glimpse of Jeff Beck with his 12-er that hasn't been seen here before:

Apparently, in 1967 the Beatles, the Experience, the Cream, and the Who (or at least John, Jimi, Eric, and Roger) all shared the Same Hairdresser:
