Magazines have been dated 1-2 months ahead of actual publication date ever since I was buying comic books in the '60's, and I remember reading the practice went all the way back to the '30's.
Supposedly rooted in publisher's attempts to one-up each other by appearing to have the most current publications on the newsstands*.
The same motivation was supposedly what drove car-makers to start introducing the new model year in late fall.
*You do remember "newsstands", right?
