What are our alternatives to photobucket?

I have a feeling whatever solutions we come up with for hosting pics that we can display in LTG will eventually go the way of Photobucket. That is, Imgur, Flickr, et al may be solutions for now but their business models will probably become averse to third-party hosting at some point as well. We may want to just start hosting pics on those other sites then providing links here to click to see them off-site instead of having them displayed within LTG threads. Sucks.

Man, I was annoyed when my S-100 sticky thread links were broken. That took some time over an afternoon to compile. But having all the pics I've uploaded to Photobucket and displayed in various LTG threads over the years suddenly not be accessible.....................GRRRRRRRRRR.

I have to rebuild the entire amp sticky. Between the photo hosting issues and the posting limitations of the new forum software, it's looking like a lot of jumping through hoops.

Sure, Photobucket is one that changed...I hate them...same as Minus.com 2 years ago...

I'm going to try and look at some of those. I think imgr looks like it may work, but tiny pic is owned by photobucket, so l ruled them out right away.

What are the forum limitations? Is it images per post? That should be configurable.

Yes, 8, also videos: one per.

I always just assumed Don's got good reasons.

Because that particular sticky was migrated over from the old board, it has far too many images and too many characters. I cannot edit it, I'm only given the option to delete it. Fortunately, my hip replacement in a couple of weeks means I will have plenty of time to fix things.
Playing with imgur.

I started using Imageshack after PB took my photos hostage for ransom. I got 50% off for a year so paid $18.99. The only problem is that they say there is a mobile app but the iTunes store says it's not available in the US (?). Otherwise it works well.

I was going to attempt to post a few photos - do we have a solution (free, hopefully) for this yet from any of you more knowledgeable LTGer's?

Get a free Wordpress site. You don't even have to create any pages. Just add the photos to your media library, and copy the link address. It's what I've been using.

Like so:

I just now started with Imgur . It's free. Took a little to get it to work and it's easier and quicker to resize than Photobucket was.

I switched to IMGUR and like it very much. I am in the process of reposting my pictures in prior threads and it is easier than Photobucket ever was. Having said that, it is still a pain in the butt and it sucks that so many photos from other people's threads are gone due to Photobucket's changed policy.

I am not a tech guy, but I wonder if it is possible to create a site/server that is dedicated to LTG photo hosting, and would theoretically be around as long as LTG is. Obviously there is a cost involved, but I assume there are several of us who would contribute if this would permanently address this issue. Maybe charge a subscription fee for those who host their photos on the site.

just a thought.

Has anyone figured out a way to transfer your photos en masse from Photobucket to something like imgur?

I could very easily put a server together. Here are the issues:

1) The front end. It's easy for me to use because I just used SFTP to put my images where I want them then link to the proper URL. Normal people don't want the hassle and want a sexy front-end that I don't have the time (nor probably the skill, honestly) to write. Im a tech guy but I've got other things on my plate.

2) Liability. What if someone uploads porn? Or something illegal? EULA are there for a reason and I can't be bothered with a lawsuit.

3) Support. Supporting a public server is a PITA. Then end. :)

Cost is an issue, too. I think it would cost something like $400 a year for a small VM that would work, but all of the above are why it probably won't happen. They're probably close to the reasons why LTG doesn't allow uploads to begin with, too, but I'm speculating there.

LTG is littered with posts about why you have to host your images elsewhere. GAD nailed it. Money, liability and hassle. The issues occur because LTG provides the service and it really doesn't change anything if the service is provided by hosting a server or just enabling a feature in the existing software.
