I’ve written songs and made recordings of some of them (and inflicted them on the LTG listeners). I mostly concentrate on the lyrics when writing, then try to fit appropriate chords to the verses & choruses. I depend on a group of musical friends to play & sing on these songs; I never tell them what to do, just provide chord structure & lyrics that they are welcome to interpret in their own way.
When mixing, I listen to the tracks dozens of times, and by the time I’m finished my appreciation has been totally dulled. I typically don’t listen to a finished song for a while, but upon re-hearing it I’m often struck by some small part that jumps out – a vocal harmony, a guitar riff, or even a simple but perfectly placed dobro slide. There’s one song that has a terrific short guitar intro (not by me). Every time I play the recording, my wife remarks on it.
