Only 2 years earlier Tim Scully and Jerry Garcia welcomed Tom Wolfe to San Francisco, in town to do background research for the Electric Kool Aid Acid Test.
Among other things.

"Tom, trust me on this. Look at Jerry, he's done it about a hundred times and he looks fine, right?"

I want the girl in the center of the front row. Melanie Griffith?

walrus

Melanie woulda been all of about 12 years old in '68, but given the resemblance, it wouldn't surprise me if it's actually Courtney Love's mother, no joke!! (from the usual source):

"Love was born Courtney Michelle Harrison on July 9, 1964 in San Francisco, California,[5] the daughter of Linda Carroll (née Risi) and Hank Harrison, a publisher and road manager for the Grateful Dead.[6][7] Love's godfather is the founding Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh.[8][9]"

That's why she's rumored to be one of the children in the back photo on Aoxomoxoa:

and he played a Br.

Yep but you gotta go find the pic yourself.

And they hadn't even achieved national notoriety yet.
What must people have been thinking?
"That guy in the rainbow pants.....
He better not show up lookin' for my daughter.
OR my son!!"

(Adorski about Courtney Love & Phil Lesh as godfather):

Sir, you are a true historian. I had all those albums when they came out, including the double live album with the 1st picture of this post on it.

Gotta have the rainbow pants... groovy man!

the rainbow pants are still around at the Electric Factory in February of 1969, where Jerry decides they pair well with a Montreal Canadiens hockey jersey, and Micky can only stand there and wonder..."who wore it better???"

There is at least a mild level of confusion about this bass on the internet. It is still unlcear to me if this first stock SF-2 bass was ultimately modded into "Big Brown," or if Big Brown was/is a second/different instrument than the one pictured here. They are likely the same bass but there is definitely a chance they are not. I have started to attempt to get to the bottom of this and so far nothing concrete one way or the other. Mgod may have some insight? I know Big Brown was originally red also but thats a standard color, especially back then.
