Hi all,

I used to have a 1971 Guild T-100D. I would like to buy another Guild electric hollow-body. The requirements are:

Either full or thin body is ok. Thin preferred

Humbuckers

Gibson style tone and volume fur each pickup preferred.

Used and pre 1995.

Trying to get an idea of models to look fit and how much I have to spend. Is not sure if any electrics ere made in Westerly? I would much prefer a guitar from that factory as. I am collecting guitars made in New England.

Thank you fir any input or advice you can offer!

Chris

I agree: Starfire III.

Open yourself up to pre 1999 or so, though. Still Westerly.

The 1999 and 2000+ models (Corona) are still great guitars, they just have Fender pickups.

Sorry - somehow thought the Guildsby was included in the requirements. Default's got some good choices and that's a damn good price for that SFII!

Note that the '70s Starfires tend to have tiny necks but they sound amazing.

At what point in time did Guild go to the narrower neck, GAD, and when did they return to 1 11/16?

I don't know when they went to 1 5/8". The earliest Starfire I've owned was a '73 SF IV and it was tiny. The earliest Starfire I've owned with a 1 11/16" neck was a '94 so my guess is that they got wider when they reissued them but I can't say that categorically because my '94 X170 is 1 5/8". I don't think I've owned (or maybe even seen) a Starfire from '95-96, but I've seen many from '97 and later.

The '99 catalog I have says that the Starfires were based on the specifications of the classic Guild Starfires from the early '60s, but having never owned or played one of those I don't know how true that is.

It may well be a per-model distinction, too.

Guild Necks are kind of all over the map on the Starfire II/III's. I have a 1961 Starfire II and it is a full 1 11/16". I have owned 2 or 3 from the late 90's and one from Corona production. 2 of the late 90's SF III's had full 1 11/16" necks. The SF-II from the late 90's had a skinny 1 5/8" neck. My 2003 Corona SF-III-90 has a Wider than 1 11/16" neck with what feels like an old Fender Baseball Bat Neck Profile. From what I understand the late 90's Starfire II's and III's are mostly 1 11/16" but there are those anomalies like the 1 5/8" neck SF-II that pop up from time to time.

GAD, wasn't the move to Corona in 2002? Hans told me that my 2001 Starfire V was one of the last of the Westerlys. It did have the Fender pickups (but not any more).
