I came across this during one of my youtube wanderings. I remember the song from the Youngbloods version... but I think that I like this one just as much. The acoustic setting and brother & sister harmony make it special!

Check it out:

And....The electric notes of the original were actually played on a Guild! Looks like an aristocrat - but I think it has DeArmond pickups.

Banana's (the Youngbloods' guitarist) webpage with lotsa clioseups right at the top:

He actually ID's it as an M75 Bluesbird but it's been pointed out by resident experts that those hadn't been created yet, in '53.
My favorite Youngbloods tune is "Darkness, Darkness" which I've linked to, here, a couple of times.
Love the tone on that one: "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee".

I think that "70's" may be right on this one. The below linked video has some good shots of the original M-75 that Banana (Lowell Levinger) was playing back in the day... check out the B&W photo @ the 4:31 mark.

It appears to be one of the M-75 Bluesbirds from 1970 that had a special mounting ring made for the DeArmond Dynas, because the guitar's top had been routed for humbuckers. But, as has often been pointed out in posts here on LTG, it is difficult to know what instrument an artist actually used in the studio on a recording (see Nick Drake).

There are some other photos of the 1970 M-75 Bluesbird shown here, along with a Dyna equipped Starfire:

The 1950's M-75 Aristocrat six-string and tenor guitars appear to be from Levinger's retail store "Players Vintage Instruments". Because he had a M-75 Bluesbird back in the "smoke-filled" 70's, he can be forgiven for confusing the two. :eek:nthego:

I'm also a big fan of the Youngbloods! Particularly, "Elephant Mountain" and "Good and Dusty".

Great "coffee shop" performance. Two great songs that are not hitting their potential in this performance. But the worst is Milton Berle..... what a jackass!!

All good stuff! I spent a nice evening going through Jesse Colin Young songs and interviews.

Harry... your comment got me to digging around in the record crates in my back room, and I found my LP copy of Jesse Colin Young's first album "The Soul of a City Boy" (1974 reissue on Capitol). Recorded in 1964 at A & R Studios in NYC, it is a solo album with vocal and acoustic guitar. I spent part of Sunday afternoon listening to it.

"Four in the Morning" from JCY's Soul of a City Boy.

Photo of JCY with a Guild F-50 SB (circa 1965). The "Instagram Stock Photo" lettering blurs the details of the guitar a little bit.

Hmmm....."Get Together" was released in '67. Now I'm wondering if it may have been originally done on that Starfire I never knew he had...to me it actually sounds more like what I'd expect from a Starfire

I do see what you mean about the special ring on that "other" (?) guitar, plus it's got a chesterfield and pickguard's missing on that one as well.

Yeah, I always thought the wording :"As played by Banana...." meant that was the actual guitar.
Every time I post that link something new comes out.
