Yes, today's score is a Guild G300 Tamarack.

I also got this, but I assume you're all more excited by the Tamarack.

What does the "Plectron" control do? Some sort of attack control or a compressor?

Axe is cool too. What a great tool. I am making do with my Mark 1.

Plectron is part of the tone stack: Bass, Middle, Treble, Plectron.

Basically a super-high frequency tone control used to accentuate of smooth over pick attack.

I could probably flip the knobs on eBay (rare! **WOW!**) and get back the money I spent on the amp but for this Guild dork it's worth it just to keep the amp on a shelf and look at them. :highly_amused:

Am I correct in assuming that the case is made of tamarack?

Boy, I'd love to have that!

Aspen and Sequoia enclosures look pretty much the same and I don't think I've ever heard of anything being made out of Sequoia. Luckily for those big 'ol trees it's a softwood. Anyway, I suppose it's possible but the pics I see online make Tamarack look like Pine. I would think some sort of Oak would be more likely.

Back to Tamarack, did you know that Tamarack is a word from the native Abenaki language which simply means “wood used for snowshoes”?

I did not. Learned it all here: http://www.wood-database.com/tamarack/

It's also called the American Larch which will forever make me think of this:

I'm not familiar with these; I'm guessing it's an acoustic guitar amp? Very cool nonetheless.

Correct. They sold four of them that I'm aware of:

G300 Tamarack
G600 Aspen
G700 Sequoia
G1000 which I don't think was named after a tree, possibly because it looked like a big footstool.

The Aspen looks to be a bigger "normal" sized version of the Tamarack with more power. Plus a foot switch, an effects loop, and more outputs and such on the back.

The Sequoia is a beast with all the features:

The G1000 looks like this:

You didn't get the cover that goes with the Tamarack?

Tamarack.jpg

I believe the G-500 is the combo cabinet version of the G-1000.

Here's my G-1000:

G-1000-1.jpg

I think it looks much better in "brown".

I did not get the cover. I covet yours.

Because it was sans cover, the wood was a bit worn. It looked like a piece of wooden furniture from a preschool where tiny filthy little hands had been rubbed all over it for 20 years. The finger joints were very rough and it just needed some love.

Guild-G300-Tamarack-Before.jpg

I took the entire thing apart, feet, handle and all, sanded the enclosure with up to 600-grit sandpaper, then rubbed the entire thing down with lemon oil and furniture polish. I also pulled the amp, blew it out, cleaned it up, and fixed the bad ground that I found. I cleaned the grill, cleaned the face plate, cleaned the knobs, put it all back together and it still sounds the same. Well, the annoying crackle from the intermittent ground is gone.

The manual says the cabinet is oak.

Shucks,that's too bad!:friendly_wink:

A stand of Tamaracks in their spring bloom (which they are right now in my area) is a stunning sight.

Also, great job with the clean-up on that amp, GAD. Looks light like new.

Thanks! It's a little darker than I'd hoped, but short of sanding more and using something like polyurethane or some sort of stain, I think I'm happy to keep it the way it is. For reference, here is the inside of one of the back panels compared with the top of the cabinet before I cleaned it up. Any kind of oil would darken it up I think, but now it's more uniform and doesn't look so old and "handled".

Very cool! How heavy is it?

walrus

I'm not sure. It's too heavy for my scale and we don't have a bathroom scale so I might need to go buy one.

It feels like a typical amp head, though not unbalanced because there isn't a massive transformer in it like the 100-watt Marshals have.
