Just to veer slightly, some of those Bigsby guitars fetch hair-raising sums of money, I've seen some of the steel guitars he built up close and they are a sight to behold

Yep, Bigsby was building guitars long before he ever designed his vibratos. And while he built less than 30 of them, nearly all of them were built for high profile professionals, and more and more people are agreeing these days that they were the blueprint for the modern electric guitar. Folks like Les Paul, Leo Fender and Ted McCarthy were all too aware of Bigsby guitars, and and most of the classic, iconic electrics from the 50's incorporate at least a few ideas that were Bigsby innovations.
