Gee, I thought that was Gerry Douglas (the dobro player) leaning on that GTI...

I notice no one took the bait on those French songwriters...:dispirited:

I thought Sandy did, but to add to what he said, Gainsbourg was a chain smoking alcoholic rebel with some undisputed artistic genius, who lived his life on his terms and his terms only, directing his unfiltered speech in the exact same form, whether he spoke to a TV studio janitor or the president of the French Republic.
Love him or hate him, but no one was left in the middle with him, and you could always bet on one thing anytime he was invited to any TV show: He would say what he wanted to say with the words he wanted to use, and chances are it would ruffle some "establishment" feathers and likely make the next day news.

As to Brel, he was definitely a major "message" singer with powerful lyrics, but I must confess I was more into music than poetry and therefore never got much into his work.

Hey Bill!! And playing a Guild 12 string, too!! She was SOOOO pitchy in that performance, it's a little hard to listen to. I'd forgotten about that song, though! :encouragement:

Sandy, that one you posted was in fact very nice...but didn't understand a word! Like Brel though, the melody is very nice.

I found an English translation for you Bill!

"I admit I went through hell, didn’t you my love ?
Before I caught wind of you (met you) my love.
Whether it pleases your or not
In dancing the Javanaise
We loved each other for the length of a song

In your opinion what have we seen of love?
From you to me you really had me going (you had me fooled) my love
Whether it pleases your or not
In dancing the Javanaise
We loved each other for the length of a song

Alas, April in vain dedicates me to love
I wanted to see that love in you my love
Whether it pleases your or not
In dancing the Javanaise
We loved each other for the length of a song

Life is not worth living without love
But you’re are the one who wanted it that way my love
Whether it pleases your or not
In dancing the Javanaise
We loved each other for the length of a song"

Pascal may correct this, but I think we can all agree that it sounds better in its native tongue. Especially when it's Ms. Peyroux singing it! Try to see her if she comes to your neck of the woods.
