I don't think they had much desire to be in Tennessee (although Memphis and Nashville probably would have had some allure back in the day), but that's why you write a song! So you don't have to do it in real life.
Prior to meeting Kesey, I think Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions woulda felt right at home, at least, when they were performing:

Sez me and many other long hairs who had the pleasure of passing through the south back then. It was the era of Lester Maddox etc. Why glorify it??

At best, it was a forced rhyme, "see and be". Brilliant stuff.
