Sad news . . . he was one of the first fingerstyle players that I heard & enjoyed, back in the '70s.

Brad, a wiki article says that John Renbourn played a D-55 for awhile.

Here's a sample of his playing, for those unfamiliar with him:

I think he played a Guild early on in his career.
Yes! See Hans' book page 124! He had a 1973 D-55 Special. (not a Special, see Hans' correction below)

He said he used the Guild on ‘The Black Balloon’ and for touring and recording with Stefan Grossman.

A regular Guild D-55; nothing 'Special' about it!
Thanks for the clarification. I was wrongly assuming each one before 1974 official production was a "special". But you wrote it was available on special order only before 1974.

Great photo of him with that happy smile, his lovely Guild D55 and the smoke. Captures some of his magic.
IMHO, The photo is 'special'.

He's left us much to enjoy and appreciate.

Yes, great smile, great shot ....... even with the truss rod cover upside down!

P.S. I'm still kickin' myself for spelling his name as 'Rembourn' in my book!

One of my favorite guitarists, tone was huge and arrangements immaculate.I used a lot of his taped lessons during the early 80's; his O'Carolan arrangements are my favorites-still play them on my guilds. He will be missed.
