I've got a Dearmond starfire IV which I love. I love it for it's brightness and jangly tone. However it does bug me that the bridge pickup is really lacking bass, and that the neck pickup is really lacking treble, so it makes it very difficult to switch between pickups without changing amp EQ. And I've spent many hours tinkering with pickup heights
Then I saw the Newark Starfire reissue which is quite affordable. Does anyone have any experience of both? Would I be getting something that similar, but better? Or is it a different animal?

Different animal. The NS SF4 have the mini "anti hum" pickups and the DeA SF "Classic" has the Goldtone full size humbuckers. The NS is also mahogany and the DeA maple. The DeA can readily accept other pickups so you might want to try a pickup swap. One of each guitar is the best way to go!
