Just wanted to put this up for folks who may not know of this band yet, I was lucky enough to hear a cut on the radio this morning.
It was one of those cuts that made me put it on my "gonna buy that album on the strength of that one cut" list.
Album is their newest: Made up Mind , cut was the "the Storm".
Do ya love that Duane Allman style slide and reverse volume pedal attacks that evoke backward tape sounds like the Beatles in "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "I'm Only Sleeping" and Hendrix's "Are You Experienced?", mixed with a flavor of Lydia Pense's vocals with Cold Blood on "You Got Me Hummin"?
That's what I was rememberin' when I heard this.
Name of their recording studio, "Swamp Raga Studio" says it all.
And love that album cover.
:peaceful:

For those who may not know who Derek Trucks is yet, he's Butch Trucks' (Allman Brothers) nephew and has been payin' his dues for quite a while now, here's his Wiki page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derek_Trucks
OK, that's my good deed for the day!

Remember also if you go to Amazon from here, the Forum'll get a small royalty.
A real painless way to donate!

Great post, I've been seeing Derek Trucks for many many years, he is unquestionably one of the very best I've ever seen. One or 2 Allman Brothers shows and a Derek Trucks band show from 10 or 15 years ago really stand out for me as Derek channelling pure magic on the stage and were just unforgettable experiences (one was at red rocks). I also saw the Clapton lineup that featured Derek and Doyle Bramhall, and countless other appearances in other bands. TTB shows have been pretty smokin and they are rapidly growing a tremendous fan base. They just played 3 nights at the Beacon and Dicky Betts joined the band and played Blue Sky, appearing with Derek for the first time since 2000. As the Allman Beothers play less shows I think we will see more shows from TTB and Warren Haynes' band Govt Mule. One thing about Derek's technique though, I don't think he uses a volume pedal. He usually uses the volume knob on the guitar. Could be anything in the studio/on the studio album though. Met him a couple times real nice guy, and Warren Haynes too.

Yeah it was a bit of a guess 'cause I didn't see how he could be doin' the knob and pickin' what he was pickin' at the same time, and I always remember Harvey Mandel's sly use of the pedal...

well he is fingerpicking, which is probably what you meant, not holding a pick- so that is one less thing in his hand.

IMO the late Mikey Houser (of Widespread Panic) was the master of the volume pedal. There are some recordings of him and Derek playing together (and some with Warren). Way too few but we are lucky to have what we have. Mikey really dialed in his tremolo effect with the volume pedal, at times. Derek was actually heavilly rumored to replace him in WP when he passed, but in the end Derek and Warren stayed in the Allmans, and Jimmy Herring joined Widepread Panic.

Guess I'll just have to check out more vids to see what he's doin' when he's doin' what he does. :highly_amused:

I know Derek doesn't use any pedals or effects live. Quite a few volume swells, though, with volume knob(s). If you want to learn how he does it, There's a great teacher on this subject, actually starts off his teachings with the right hand.

Derek's a fingerstyle guitarist. Always has been.

We're the same age and both from North East Florida, he was a wunderkind sensation when he was 13 and 14. Also has an enormous musical pedigree in that he's Butch Truck's nephew.

Been watching him play basically my entire life. Met him in brief passing a couple times.
By all accounts, he and his wife are exceptionally cool and down to earth people and major, major torch-bearers for that particular genre of southern'y-blusey-rock. They're still pushing boundaries and digging deep into it whereas most everyone else is hardly much more than a carbon copy of someone else.

They deserve every ounce of success they have, good to see some mainstream recognition starting to flow their way but I have a feeling they will always be a bit under-appreciated.

Big fan for quite some time here, too. Back in '09 I went to see the Derek Trucks Band open for Santana at Madison Square Garden with my boss, and remember telling him that it was quite likely that he'd be better than the headliners (and he was). Derek laid down a great set, and we got to meet him at the intermission, as a friend of a friend is his manager (same guy who got us the tickets). When Santana came out, they were good, but were SO LOUD that I ended up leaving after a few songs.

Yeah, I'm getting old.

Pascal put you up to that, didn't he? (insert combo tongue-sticking out/LOL emoticon here, it's an inside joke and I can't remember if you're in on it)

He didn't Al, but I'm really not kidding. I've always considered myself a Santana fan, but they really were that loud. I've also walked out on John Entwistle for the same reason.

As far as Pascal is concerned, well, I love the guy, but we don't share the same taste in music. I mean, he doesn't like The Who, either!

I saw Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi (sp?) at the Hampton Casino (in Cow-Hampshire) in 2008, sort of a retirement-depression-booster for me...I learned two things...I dislike any IPA-style beer, and that the band was one of the best I have ever seen. If they came around again locally I would buy tickets at full price in a heartbeat!

Ah! Yeah after seeing Derek I would have probably left running so as not to spoil his classy play in my memory, knowing what was coming.... <insert the "oh no he didn't!" icon here>

Go Vettel! Show 'em Texans what you can do with a Renault engine! :)

You got that right homie.... but we do share a certain appreciation of cowboy boots... among so many other things. ;)

That's what I was talking about! And how 'bout this Grosjean guy hmmm?
Sweet track in Austin btw....

I hereby present you yet another fine example of extreme veering, from Derek Truck to F1 racing. Thank you. Thank you very much.
(I have a feeling Al will appreciate, and it's his thread after all)

Well, if this Vettel kid was drivin' fer Ferrari there'd be no stoppin' him.
(insert deadpan delivery icon here)
BTW did anyone catch that comment about F1 cars being capable of 0-100 and back to zero in 7 seconds?
For comparison, 0-60 in just under 7 seconds is still quite respectable acceleration for a production street car.
And with a new engine Formula, next year should be very interesting.
Both Ferrari and Renault have great experience building turbo-charged V-6 motors, but Ferrari just may have the edge when it comes to integrating 'em with a chassis, whereas Renault can only supply 'em to chassis builders...
Sadly my favorite guy, Raikonnen, who has proved to be one of the few capable of standing on the podium with Vettel, and who WILL be driving for Ferrari next year, opted out of the final 2 races of the season (and a lock on 3rd place and a possible second in the Driver's Championship) to get back surgery.
So I only watched a couple of laps of the race, then I switched over to VH1 where they were running a "Crossroads Benefit" concert marathon.
I thought it was very interesting to note how many guys were playing "bareback" and still getting some of the dirtiest sounds you could imagine....
Even Jeff Beck.
Who's been known to sport good ol' "Waffle Stompers" btw.

If I may, there is no stopping him now..... (8 consecutive wins) :)

I didn't.
Another impressive F1 stat. is the pit stops for all wheels/tires replacement under 3 seconds.....
Take that PepBoys! lol

Yup. Their motors are THAT good. "Cockedoodledoo!" lol

guys were playing "bareback"

What does this mean? Acoustic?
And damn! Did I miss Jeff on TV???... Unacceptable. Even for an F1 race.

"Pickless"

Compounded by missing the winsome Miss Wilkenfeld as well.
"'Cause We've Ended As Lovers" and a much more recent tune whose name is escaping me.
Should be available on DVD, it was the 2007 show, I think? Not a "live while we were watching" one.
