Looked a little like one of de Gaulle's fleet. Joe
Thanks for the flashback Joe, and yes, one more fact to add to its resume: The black DS was the presidential favorite, up to the Pompidou years and you could even still spot a few, pulling in Matignon under Giscard D'Estaing... 8)

Those old Alfa Romeos just stir my car guy soul, Pascal. In fact, owning an old GTV has always been on the bucket list
maybe not the bucket list but definitely one of my favorite pipe dreams...

Perhaps the most beautiful car ever made IMO.
Definitely in my top ten all time list. Quite the competition record too.

Yep, I read that Tom. Somewhere on the net I read 500 as a production number for HK500 but I doubt it, 'cause it was in production between 1957 and 1961, I think, and the production number for those years is around 60. So maybe, the 500 is for the whole production of Facel. Nonetheless these cars were quite expensive then, almost 10000 dolars (¿? - Internet is not really accurate), and they were used by famous people like Picasso. Albert Camus died in a crash in one of these cars... Lots of stories behind them!
AS you say, internet's not really that accurate... link here says 183 HK2's made between '61 and '64.
Confirming Coastie's observation, Ringo Starr's first "luxury" purchase in '64. Somebody told him it'd be a good investment, but I suspect he was more interested in the fact that it was the fastest 4 seater production car in the world at the time, courtesy of a big ol' Chrysler V8.. that's our Richie...

Al,

I think we were talking about the HK500, not the HK2, which was based on the HK500. That's why the numbers seems so disparate. Anyway, here there a couple of interesting links, besides of yours:

  • HK500: at sale since may, 1958,
  • HK2: at sale since december, 1961,

All the best,
B.

 I stand humbly corrected. Got a little sideways while I was looking for info about Ringo's car...

In high school, I had a '56 Chevy identical to this one.

I had one of them 2-door posts too Hatte. 210 model though. 265, 3 on the floor. I put some coil springs between the rear axle and frame. The rear bumper sat right around 3 ft off the ground. It was quite the hot rod. I was on a first name basis with the local cops. 8)

Mine got only eleven miles to the gallon.

Holy cow! How do you remember that stuff?

I do remember gas being less than 30 cents per gal. back in '69 though.

I remember 25 cents a gallon in the 1950s. And a pack of cigs for 25 cents in the 1960s.

When I was but a lad, I was driving with my Uncle. He said we needed gas and I inferred a sense of urgency. We pulled into the next town and drove by a gas station. I was surprised - thinking we were running on fumes - and asked why. My uncle replied that the price was too high. That was $0.28/gallon.

And yeah, "Nickle Coke".

AWESOME pic, Coastie!!! :D
Being pic-posting challenged, I couldn't post it myself, but that one came up along with this one when I was googling "ringo starr facel vega":
http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2010/12 ... 1940s.html
Several amusing sightings there including Sean Connery in a Sunbeam Alpine and Roy Rogers in an Indy 500 Pace Car , and a somewhat petulant appearing Mick Jagger awaiting the completion of a traffic ticket... at first glance thought it was a Ferrari 250 Long Wheel Base but then realized might also be an Aston Martin with custom coachwork, the hood is quite unique....not to mention the evident rear fender collision damage...
Ahhhh...in fact, here we are, then:
http://www.mickjagger.com/category/news
It's a DB6.
Apparently he'd just suffered the indignity of being pranged by a Ford.
Unusual by the way to think of Mr. Connery piloting something prior to the Aston, but I suspect that car made an appearance in Dr. No, as seems suggested by the caption.
Speaking of Bond, many folks are unaware that prior to the Aston Martin, Commander Bond's pride and joy was a "Blower Bentley"
In fact one actually got a few moments' screen time in the '67 version of Casino Royale, piloted by the inimitable Peter Sellers. :D
