It might be interesting to tally all these ratings and publish them somewhere. Here's my vote:

Acoustic:
1. Joni Mitchell
2. Leo Kottke
3. Neil Young
4. Phil Keaggy

Electric:
1. John Fogerty
2. John Cipollina (Quicksilver)
3. Jerry Garcia
4. James Gurly (Big Brother)

You may note that I rated my favorite guitar players for overall appeal, not for the ability to "blow you away" with fancy stuff.

If we're still talking "guitar hero" here, it's that personal connection each of us has with one player/singer that rises above all the others; especially when you consider that one inimitable quality....inspiration.

I don't think we're talking about best guitarist, singer, etc., but the one who inspired you the most.
Pick ONE. It's tough, I know.

I'll stick with Doc,
Joe

The three guys that I learned most of my fingerpicking style from are:

Jim Croce

Gordon Lightfoot

John Prine

Best guitarists? That's another story:

Chet Atkins

Stevie Ray Vaughan

Duane Allman

While I have others (like Jorma and Mark Knopfler), I can't believe nobody's mentioned David Lindley yet. Another seriously good guitarist (that's known more as a producer) is John Leventhal, AKA Mr. Rosanne Cash. The first time I saw her live, he absolutely blew me away.

Dreadnut Spot ON! Stevie Ray and Chet Atkins. And what about Willie! Nobody mentioned Willie Nelson.

Dreadnut, I really like your choices, but I would have to add Mark Knopfler to the mix.

I know, that makes four. Delete the one of your choice.

Richard Smith is my guy, in fact he is coming again to my small town in NH this Tuesday. I will be there. Also Tommy Emmanuel is coming to Burlington VT in May, I may go to see him. It is about 2 hours away. I don't particularly like all the banging and clanging on the guitar that he does; but I really would like to see him.

My two:
1. Richard Smith--he can do it all.
2. Henri Jobert--my first real guitar teacher, he could play and teach like no one else. He understood music and was not just a chord thumper.

I just gotta say this about Duane Allman - look what he accomplished in his short time on earth, and what would he have done if he'd lived past the age of 23? Clapton's definitely one of the greats, but go back and listen to the old Allman Bros. and Duane's got licks that rival anything Clapton's ever done. In my humble opinion :D

Some time ago, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Hendrix #1 and Duane Allman #2.

As long as I'm on my soapbox, what about Carlos Santana? He makes the guitar wail and cry, and I love that he brought the Latin beat into the mainstream of rock & roll.

You get my drift, I had to pick 3 because those 3 cover a decent spread in style. I don't want the "best" because that tends to lead to an arguement

Thanks for all this links! I've listened to some awesome stuff today. Keep 'em comming.

You never asked for the "best" in the first place, so you're covered.
That's why I tried to steer it back to the singular guitar hero. :?

Oh well, good try anyway, Beat! :D

*Doc's still my hero and I'm still searching for that photo of me in Deep Gap 37 years ago.
