Percussion instruments and techniques

I'm finding myself drawn more and more to explore the art of percussion....the instruments and techniques...what the heck is this guy beating on at 1:19 of this video? :

It looks like one of my grandpappy's moonshine jugs but sounds really cool imho.

Not sure of names. But I am reminded of pottery and it turns out there are folks who devote much energy to the creation and use of ceramic instruments, including percussion. One example here. Dig through this site because there are pictures, names, sound clips and demonstration videos.

I have not convinced Mrs. Fro. (the potter) to make any for me but she has been known to accept commissions.
