Really good clip...

Jorma Kaukonen wearing a swastika necklass. What's up with that?

That's one great band who could do it live as well as in the studio!

Thanks, enjoyed it.

Capn,
Oh boy, I instantly went into my "them-is-fightin-words" defense mode there for a second
I'm thinking that maybe this is off of some new DVD that came out amongst the current woodstock craze. I wonder if there's more to come!

Jmac,
I've noticed that necklace too. In Hinduism a right facing swastika celebrates the evolution of the universe... that sounds a bit more JA style than the Nazi version. I wouldn't worry about it. Just listen to that solo! :D

Fab,
most certainly. not to mention they still had the LSD from the previous night sloshing around in their system
"we had a whole lot of the orange... everything is still vibrating." - Slick, on stage, at woodstock

From the horses` mouth http://jormakaukonen.com/thoughts/ Tues. Aug. 11 2009 Great video Mello.......
Thanks for the timely link bassmyf: one man's symbol ... another's crown of thorns. "When will they ever learn ... " I wonder if that guy ragging Jorma from the comfort of the grassy knoll, when the bikers pull up alongside him at a stoplight with their WW2-era German coal-scuttle helmets and iron crosses on their back, think that guy rolls down his window and gets in their faces about their symbols?

thanks for the great link! guess I was wrong... but I was on the right track. I knew he wouldn't support the nazis.
Hi Mello; swastikas and nazi doo doo show up in music with the heavy metal crowd ... and never went away. Roughly; about 'badness' but not political badness. The 1960s were about repudiation of the political and social right-wing ... as symbolized then in the US by the John Birch Society.

Jack's best musical friend would never have done Mello dirty ...

I've never noticed the swastika used by heavy metal groups or fans. Most heavy metal imagery that I'm aware of has either a spiritual (or alternate spiritual) theme; Skeletons, corpses, crosses, pentagrams, or themes often depict a marriage of pleasure and violence; extremely healthy young women in submissive poses, men or corpses wielding medieval era weapons.

Hi jmac: This is a wiki article generally on the subject of The Occult and this is a wiki article about National Socialism and the Occult. Having read both, you might want to compare some of the ideas in those articles with your suggestions above.

Going further, another wiki article on National Socialist Black Metal and yet another wiki article on Skinhead Bands Both of these help make the connection between Nazi symbolism and it's relationship to forms of modern music; you can call it what you want but I'll stick with the generic term 'heavy metal'.

Finally, you might consider reading about Nazi photographer, cinematographer, and propagandist Leni Riefenstahl. She is both demonized and praised for her work; either way she was instrumental in shaping the images of National Socialism especially the occult, other-worldly aspects and applying them for political purposes.

cj: This week is going to be busy for me, but I'll get to those articles when I can.

Yeah the occult, that's what I was referring to.

The skinhead type bands are what used to go by the name hardcore punk or just hardcore. The only band I really liked in this vein was Suicidal Tendencies. They were about as close to being mainstream hardcore as you could get. I can't say I recall any swastikas in those bands pictures, but that was twenties years ago, and I wouldn't be surprised if some of those bands used that kind of imagery. Eventually hardcore evolved into something called speed metal and thrash metal and I'm not sure where its gone from there. The audience is nearly as big for these bands as it was in the eighties and nineties. As much as I dislike the sound of the speed metal bands, I really admire the speed with which they can play, and the physical endurance needed to play at that speed for an entire show.

I never assumed that any of these bands had a political agenda. They were just looking for a hook, and a way to appeal to an audience.

I had the feeling you didn't have any idea that National Socialism was the source of so much metal symbolism. What time does That Metal Show come on your cable? I think metal is armpit music ... thanks for the lecture ... but no thanks.

What? Thanks for the lecture?

You're an expert when it comes to electronics, but I think you misspoke when you said that, "swastikas and nazi doo doo show up in music with the heavy metal crowd.",

I never said you were wrong I only said I never noticed that.

Your "informative links" were from wikipedia. But they confirm what I said.

Look for yourself. Heavy Metal bands are not Black Metal bands (nor are they Hardcore bands).

Then you write a degrading message to me:
