It looks to me like the speaker might be a field coil unit. Before permanent magnets were common, they used to run high voltage through an electromagnet. This also made the speaker part of the B+ filter circuit. In the righthand pic, there's four wires, and two of them are running to the magnet structure on the speaker. It probably sounds pretty good, but it makes speaker swaps a bit more challenging.
