WHOAH! You've got John Cippollina's setup there in that final pic! (Quicksilver Messenger Service, for those who may not recognize the name. One of the premier San Francisco "acid -rock" bands.) I've seen the pic few times but never recognized any Guild content! ISthere any Guild content? Can't really tell from here...some of the effects units perhaps?

Re: Reference Post: Guild and Guild/Avnet Amps

Hi Al and thank you for the ID'ing the owner of that rig. I scarfed the pic some time ago but didn't take the time to tie it all down. I would say that the rig is in the R&R Hall of Fame except that I don't know that for sure and people can get busted around here for playing fast and loose with the facts ... so ... I'll edit my remark: "... the rig might be in the R&R Hall of Fame ... ". Yes, the Guild content there is pretty obscure ... perhaps fractional? :D

You piqued my curiosity and your memory was good..it IS in the R&R Hall of Fame according to his memorial website...with a rundown of the equipment:
http://www.johncipollina.com/rock.html
Even if there's no "Guild" content, it IS one of the most gorgeous set ups I've ever seen.
It's them "gold trumpets" on the top that really set it off...

Not sure I can remember ever seeing exponential horns at all in the land of R&R; not so uncommon in PAs and other applications .. pic of vintage Klangfilms below:

1669855617654.png

... and commonly used in theater speakers:

1669855626445.png

But the pic offered good terminal punctuation for this parade of Guild amps. 8)

Interestingly, on the first album, there's a track penned by Hamilton Camp, "Pride of Man" that has a prominent horn arrangement. I usually detest horns in hard rock of that period but that's one arrangement I like. Wonder if Cippollina was influenced in the studio, or by the final mixes? I don't think he actually had that setup at that time.

Absolutely. It's a great document to have on file here. Thanks for the bump.

Wow, capn! A fine start, to say the least. Like I said before, you and matsickma need to write the bible on Guild amps! I am duly impressed.

Thanks John but matsickma has forgotten more about Guild amps than I'll ever know. Hope all is well with you. J

Early 50's Masteramp. Speaker code indicates a RCA 12" speaker, 49th week of 1953.

Any information is good information! I just spoke to Aaron Newman, (who designed the Thunder series) on the phone and had an interesting and productive conversation on the phone! Interesting stuff about Guild amps and the industry in general.

I tell you what! John and I could have had a three hour conversation just over what Aaron Newman told me. For one thing, The 66J and 99J's were almost direct copies of Ampegs because Ralph Sanders (the amp person in the fifties) was a technician, not an engineer. He didn't have the skills to design an amp, therefore, he cloned them. Aaron said that Ampeg had no engineer designing their amps either, which is probably why they sounded so good!
Since Aaron was from the hifi world (he codesigned the Lafayette KT600 and KT550), it took him some time to get used to designing guitar amps. Compounding this was Al Dronge was an old-school jazz guitarist - no treble, all midrange (muddy, according to Aaron), so they were trying to get an amp that would sound like a Fender, while the amps they were selling were mostly for the jazz market.

1956 Guild Masteramp. 3x12AX7s, 2x6L6s and a 5U4GB. Power transformer bolted to the bottom of the cabinet, connected by an umbilical to the top chassis. 35 watts or so.

Missed your post! Pics would be good, followed by manufacturers codes on the components. :05.18-flustered:

Sorry for responding late, but that's fascinating. So Aaron's hi-fi background is why the Thunder series uses the 6GW8 and run so clean? I still warm up the tubes on mine and listen to her shine.
