I may be an anomaly around here. I started playing Punk Rock in the late '70s, played many years in a "post-punk" band through the '80s through current times. I've toured Europe a few times, playing guitar and doing sound. I work full-time in a recording studio, we do mostly jazz, classical, folk acts, lots of acoustic music. I've made a living most of my life cooking, until about a year and a half ago I was a sous-chef in a French restaurant.

I have too many electric guitars and amps. I wanted an acoustic and found this site to verify my choice was good. I like Guilds quite a bit and will try to get an electric one of these days. I'd like a semi-hollowbody, and any advice would be appreciated.

I live in Minnesota, I'm 48. Howdy.

What do I do for a living ? Nothing !!! I go to the mailbox on the 1st & pick up my check. Took the pension almost 4 years ago after selling for 33 years.

Now I'm doing the things that used to irritate the crap out of me. Like take all day to decide what to do for lunch, or wait till tomorrow to finish a little project. So far it's just about perfect.

Gettin busier now with guitar lessons & seems like a new grandchild arrives about once a month.

In the US, higher ed (which is neither hinger nor ed) has been ruined by preservative capitalism at one end and liberile pc at the other. It's become a business as arrogantly corrupt as Enron and as pompusly silly as Al Sharpton.

I'm going to quit and take a better job: washing elephants at a nickle a herd.

Well, what do I do for a living.....

I now work with schools to help them become better at what they are and need to be doing. I've been a teacher, a counselor, and an administrator in secondary and higher education back when. That gave me the background to do what I do now.

Matsickma, Even further back when, I was in the Air Force where I first jumped out of perfectly good aircraft for a living.

I've worked as a geologist since 1977. Latest count is 33 states and 16 countries. However, I just quit the old company and started a new job with a company in Harrisburg, PA... near both HoboKen and Matsickma. I will not be in the office, as I will work on the Wolf Creek Dam for the next several years. This is a Army Corp of Engineers dam near Jamestown, KY and is leaking badly. I will be fixing the leaks.

I make my living as a Professor of Biology at a level I research university. Every fall I teach intro cell biology to 300+ aspiring MDs and PhDs... and run a small research lab on the side.

Outside the classroom and lab, I am (1) a husband (to Anne); (2) "Daddy" (to Becky, 8, and Tina, 6); (3) avid flyfisherman (not doing quite so much fishing these days, see #2, above); (4) steam locomotive fanatic; (5) amateur astronomer; (6) camera/photography hobbiest; and last, but not least (7) wannabe folk musician.

Because of #6 above, much of the last 4 years of family and fun is chronicled in digital images, that you are welcome to peruse at http://www.pbase.com/gard

GardMan,

Nice pix and some cute kids, you're a blessed man.

Last weekend my girlfriend and I rode the historic Strasburg to Paradise steam railroad in Lancaster County PA. What a beautiful ride through the Amish countryside.

Well, after serving 10 years in the USAF (Command Post Operations) I seperated with mixed emotions "Joy and Happiness" Actually this country boy owes a lot to the training and experiences I received in the Military, wouldn't change a thing. A very humble but proud Vet!
I retrained in the Heating and Airconditioning industry and worked for 10 years at a Residential Fuel Oil Company, on Long Island, Starting and managing the Air Conditioning Division and Served as Company Service Manager.
I started my own HVAC contracting business with nothing more than a Pickup, a few tools and my reputation. The business grew over the following 10 years, ending up with a couple of Service Vans, some inventory, a large customer base, and some employees. I sold the business a little over a year ago, and Relocated to Michigan. (Kids grew up and on their own, ex-wife remarried, time for me to move on down the road 8) )
I've been Mr Mom since I moved to Michigan, married my soul mate and loving having her and her 3 kids in my life. Family is very fullfilling and important to me.
I'm currently negotiating a Lead HVAC Tech position with the new Odawa Hotel and Casino, opening in June of this year. Perhaps I'll break the 10 year thing and actually retire this time if I land the job.
Through it all, good and bad, I don't know what I would have done without my guitar. It's my escape to maintain sanity.
Finding and Joinging this Forum, getting to chat with all of you, has been very rewarding thus far, thanks for welcoming me as you have done with so many others. Said it before, I'll say it again, your a great buch of guys!

Thx for the comments, GoG. I haven't had the chance to ride the Strasburg line, tho' have seen pics. I have ridden a number of historic steam trains, in OR, CA, CO, and our one here in UT (they run a "Polar Express" train at Xmas that has become a family tradition). I love the smells, sounds, and sights of steam locomotives... to stand 10' from the tracks while the UP challenger #3985 (a 4-6-6-4, biggest operational steamer still around) barrels past at 50 MPH is quite an experience. Man!

Are you fellows hitting me where I live!

Been trying to get time to go visit an old AF friend in Utah and go fish the Green River with him. I'll just have to continue to fly-fish the LeTort and Yellow Breeches around Carlisle, PA until then.

An old Edinboro U. classmate of mine was one of the engineers on the Strasburg Railroad on the week-ends. Once a year they take the big train off of the Strasburg to Paradise line and go up through Harrisburg & out onto the Rockville Bridge, the longest and largest stone-arch bridge in the world. It crosses the Susquehanna River between Marysville and Dauphin, PA. Many years ago now I took my trusty canoe and put myself out in the river just a bit down-stream from the Rockville Bridge and Randy stopped the ole Strasburg steam bucket out on the middle of the bridge while I took a ton of photos of her. It was great! You'd swear that it was right of the 1800s! I'll try to find some of 'em and post 'em. They are in a box of 35mm slide pictures somewhere around here.

I hope to go with Randy out to CO. to ride the Silverton RR someday.

I always post late, because I work until late. WHAT a prestigious group. All walks of life and we all love Guild's! I am (They call me Chief-weird title eh?) Chief of Sales for a Domestic Manufacturer of Adult Incontinence Products. If you do not know what that is, it is like a Depends style product, but we are actually the number one market share holder.

Hopefully - None of you will contact me for a favor...

HoboKen,
We have ridden the Silverton a couple of times... a wonderful ride. Did it once in the late fall, with the aspens turning gold and a light touch of snow. A mite cold, but gorgeous.

This summer we will be returning to a guest ranch we stayed at 2 years ago, on the Conejos River just off the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic RR... For a week, my wife and girls ride horses all day, I fish all day, will chase the steam train for a morning, and am learning some cowboy tunes so that I can play a short set during the "talent evening." Plus, there are zillions of humming birds to photograph! One of my coolest memories is getting a hummer to sit on my finger while it fed at the feeder...

...and, not to make you envious, but I'll be heading up to the Green River Sun and Mon for the Blue Wing Olive hatch. 10 yrs ago, a couple of my buddies and I chipped in and bought a used Clackcraft drift boat. I average 8-10 days a year on the Green... we have one spring trip that is a 19 year tradition. So, when you do make it out here, you should definitely look me up. If I can't get you to the Green, I know a number of small streams close enough for a day trip from SLC...

And Coastie... your beautiful country is on my list of places to visit (and fish) before I die. When I was (quite a bit) younger, one of my heroes was Sir Edmund Hillary (isn't he a native NZer?)... But you do know that all those famous New Zealand Rainbow Trout hail from California, don't you? (probably from the McCloud or Feather River)
