Well, I guess I should log in here...I feel like the youngster of the group!

Graduated LSU in '79 and went into the US Army with my ROTC commission. Korea, 82nd Airborne, 7th Special Forces Group and then Assistant Professor of Military Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Resigned and moved to Maryland with my wife and new-born son, and soon after the wife filed for divorce, and here I am twenty-years later.

I tried financial services with Merrill Lynch and The New England, that lasted about ten years, then I opened up a specialty running store in 2000. Haven't made it yet, but at least I am paying bills, buying an occasional Guild, and helping my son finish out his program at Florida State.

My girlfriend, the love of my life, moved away about a year ago, a combination of job opportunity advancement and a chance to be close to her aging parents. We stayed in close contact until she seemingly just dumped me, no return phone calls or emails, then I found out later she was hit over by a truck that ran a red light while she was in the crosswalk.

So I run to lose my blues, play my guitar to learn how to play the blues, but I am trying to find away, and come here now and then to find out what other people who play Guild guitars think about in their free time.

 what a story, too.
sometimes life seems to be just a little too hard.
but thank god the guilds are there for sweetening the bitter moments.

all the best

Just bumping this thread. IIRC, this is how we used to introduce ourselves to the board brothers and sisters. Fun to take a look back and it would be cool (at least in my mind) if we could resume that. I can't keep track of the new member posts if I'm away from the board for a couple of days. :-(

Definitely an interesting thread...good to see how many different ways there truely are to make it out there.

I am a 24 year old living in Central Massachusetts. Grew up living on Cape Cod (a blessing and a curse) and began playing guitar when I was 8.

Graduated from UMass - Amherst in 2008 with a degree in Civil Engineering; working at a local engineering firm specializing in water treatment and distribution. Engaged to the most lovely woman there is - date set for mid October.

Slowly learning to take it day by day. If you're happy right now, then what is the problem?

Ya know, I think I missed this one too. Thanks, Default!
Remember that commercial with the guy in the hot tub, with the two hot bikini babes, asking him what he does, and he says "I sell paper".
Remember how the babes say "OOOOOHH!!! How exciting!!!", just before he has to duck out for a sudden emergency that Immodium AD could have prevented?
Yeah, that's me. :(

That was great reading. Seeing Mark's and John's posts were bittersweet. Wish we could turn back the clock. Man I miss those guys...

Ah, so that's where John's text came from, that he forwarded to ladytexan as a biographical sketch of himself. He fought that disease quite awhile.

I'm employed as an earth science geek, using instruments to find things underground (both natural & man-made).

Scratch, I worked for a month near Danang in the late 1990's, but for a much more benign reason than your travels to Vietnam. Was performing geophysical surveys related to a highway tunnel that was being designed at that time (now built & in use). Pretty countryside, in an area they called Hai Van Pass (I believe it means "sea cloud pass"). Most folks were quite nice to us, especially after they learned that I was a bit too young to have fought in what they called the "American War". 8)

I think I missed this one the last time around
I used to say I was the resident college bum, then I graduated (with an associates in art). I tell people it means I know everything possible about art and get to be an ass about it.
I still have my part time gig at the local high school. I've been trying to find full time employment (its $80 bucks a week I didnt have before, but you can't go far on $80 these days.)
I'm currently trying to get on as an intern at a local radio station. I'm hoping that pans out.
If I can ever get hired somewhere else, I'm going back to college and getting my associates in communications- broadcasting degree (even if it takes me a few semesters to get all the credits done)

I had not seen this thread either, or maybe I did, as a matter of fact I might have responded already but missed my post. Yeh, its been that kind of week  Right now, I am a stay at home dad, running a small business and doing home remodeling , mostly flips. Love the guitar, still learning to play and enjoying every minute of it.
Question, what happened to some of the guys/girls from the earlier posts. I haven't seen them around for some time. I guess , jobs, family, life got in the way. A lot of them seemed pretty cool.

Although I’ve posted a few bits of info here and there in various threads about my background, here's a short bio. I received my Bachelors, M.S. and Ph.D. (Industrial Technology) degrees from Purdue University. I’ve been a faculty member at Purdue (tenured) and Texas A & M Universities (reason I moved to Texas).

Last ten years, I worked for two large international engineering, construction, procurement & management (EPCM) firms – you’d know the names if I mentioned them - focused on international projects. Places I’ve worked include Australia, London, Norway, Kazakhstan, Cairo, Haiti, St. Croix, Manila….and a few others. Projects ranged from mining/metals, petrochemical, oil/gas, power (nuclear & fossil), & infrastructure to a few government projects. What do I do? I help others do what they do better - technical training for craft/trades, field engineering and construction; and managerial training for mid- and upper managers.

The great news is, that wherever one goes, a great common denominator is playing the guitar. I’ve jammed with some really kewl folks all over…even played some of the guitars made in Cebu, Philippines on the beach in Cebu. :) One of my jam buddies (compadre on the project in Norway) did fill-in as lead guitarist for Three Dog Night…..and owns a 1959 Les Paul. So, so fun!

I'm going for most boring job description of the lot. I make my living as a pension transfer specialist - requires a lot of qualification here in the UK, and direct registration with the FSA - our equivalent of the SEC in the US. The organisation I work for is a subsidiary of Zurich (which also owns Farmers in the US).

Well - that's the confession outa the way! Born Jan 1949, university drop out in the late 60's, made a living balancing books until 1986 when I went into financial services in 1986 and gaind my qualifications there.

Hobbies wise, did a lot of acting (some paid) 1968 - 1980, and also joined a small Folk band around 1979, first as a singer, and taught myself to play guitar badly so I could solo as well. Got married 1982. Eldest son is 21 and just finished university (awaiting results) - and West - he's a black belt in Tae Kwondo. Younger son is 19 and about to start at University - he does weight training. They'll be my bodyguards when I get famous (like never). Just gone back to acting and about to appear in A Midsummer Night's Dream in July. Like to make my living acting and singing - perhaps people would pay me lots of money to go away if I sang outside their businesses

So much for me.

This is like looking back at ancient history  I'm still trying to up the paid acting work but still having to work part time at the day job  Eldest son now working in Shanghai teaching English - younger son graduated in Biological Science but working for Marks & Spencer

Sadly no Ken - last year we did Africa and China - so this year just a little cottage holiday in Merrie England. Son James will be visiting us twice so we don't have to go to him - and he will probably bring his girlfriend on the secon visit in October - we met her last year.

Still have this dream of driving across the northern/middle states of the USA starting say in Washington DC and ending up un Washington State. Some other year!

Of course, if I get some major role in a Hollywood blockbuster

Old thread, fun read, didn't know this existed. Spent most my childhood in El Paso, Texas. Graduated from Baylor University with a BS in Chemistry in 2003. Went on to get my Ph.D. (2008) in Organic Chemistry from U of I at Urbana-Champaign. Then I came back to Texas for my post doctoral work. Currently I have joint post-doc positions at the Dept. of Chem and Biochem at UT Austin and the Dept. of Experimental Therapeutics at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. My time at these locations is almost up and am in the process of applying for tenure track academic positions.

I have been married 3 years now to a wonderful lady. We have been together since '99. She is a lawyer who enjoys marathons so that helps keep me in shape. 2 dogs. No kids yet.

Wow...

I didn't know this thread existed either. Reading CJ's bio is indeed bittersweet or worse...

Well, as to myself for those that do not know, I am now retired. I was a firefighter with my city, starting in 1976, a fire officer since 1982, and retired in Fall of 2008 with 20 years as a Deputy Chief under my belt. I miss the job terribly, more than you could imagine, but it was time...I guess. I work part time in the Haz Mat Office out of the state fire academy. Mostly do fit tests for respirators...this is a hoot, for a guy with a beard

Started playing guitar in about 1966 I would guess, an old Audition acoustic. Played in garage bands and bars through the end of my senior year in high school and then college became the priority...actually the last time I played solo acoustic would have been that Fall of '71, some Tom Rush tunes in Speech Class at Fitchburg State College (now University)...sold my 'Nocaster in about '85 to buy a video camera, bought a retired firefighter's old Gibson in '90 and I was hooked again. Seemingly have accumulated all this stuff I don't use but have to have over this time, but hey as I tell Sirkku I don't hang in bars and don't bet on sports

Oh yeah, did get my Bachelors eventually, in Industrial Science/Electrical Engineering. Started working on my Master's in Fire Protection Engineering, but calculus got the better or me...did get a Certificate of Advanced Study from Northeastern University though...and am/was a Certified Fire Inspector by the state...

Oh, I should note that the comment above is not taking Sirkku in vain; as those who met her at LMG II and in Orlando, she is more patient with me than I could possibly ask for these past 37 years. I love her beyond words.

My son needs a guitarist for a few songs Saturday before his regular player shows up (at the Shutesbury Sportsmans' Club, I can only imagine this gig as something out of the Blues Brothers)...so, gotta get some heavy top/skinny bottom strings on the Mexican Strat and start practicing Tom Petty songs (Lord, save me!).

I guess this will show what I am really made of...
