Does anyone have any experience with these guitars:

Some of these are GAD's with a new pickguard. Why is his treatment so special? Sounds mostly like a regular setup on steroids....

Yeah, Nigel. I was thinking the same thing that you were. Sounds like a thorough set-up. Maybe he's buying asian imports (says he "hand-selects" his guitars) and then investing the time to make them play well.

I've played one of these. Zager buys bulk Chinese versions of Big Name brand guitars with no bridge, nut or saddle, puts a cheap bridge and a plastic nut and saddle on that are cut a tiny bit wider and markets them as "genius. About 3 years ago, he announced his retirement and buyers and sellers alike went nuts to get the "few" that were left. Oddly enough. most of the sellers, however different their screen name, lived in Lincoln Ne. Several guitars sold for $895, and even more oddly. many of those sold seemed to be bought by just a few buyers, again, in Lincoln NE. The scammers bought and sold the same guitars over and over again, making their money when an outsider got excited about the upcoming "scarcity" and jumped in. Many of these transactions were questioned and quietly dealt with by eBay.

Wow, that's quite a tale, Tony T! How'd it play?? :?:

Some of these Zager models look as if they're based on GAD's. I had wondered if he'd managed to buy a batch of factory seconds an changed the pickguard, modified the headstock and pasted a new label in.

You'd think someone in the legal department at FMIC or MIRC would have had problem with it...........

Actually it played ok, but sounded crappy. When I was looking into it, their big seller, as advertised, was the "Sigma, by Martin, of Nazareth,PA."

I've never seen or played one, but from what I have read over on the Acoustic Guitar Forum, what he did was take a low-end Asian acoustic, file the frets low and then lower the nut and saddle to make the action super low.

So as Tony said above: "easy to play, but sounded crappy", as would be expected with this kind of treatment.
If it really worked, all guitars would be made that way.

Yeah, what he said.

Evidently, the royalties from "In The Year 2525" are getting pretty slim. It's not like anyone re-made the song or anything

If it is really true that the guitars are being purchased from Asia and finished here then the guilty party would be the factory which is probably not honoring agreements concerning the exclusive use of a design. That said, there are a lot of similar situations in electronics where the factory makes "a few extra" and sells them on the side and the U.S. companies have not been able to stop that.
