I have this on my smartphone, takes only a couple of seconds to download a clip, then play it anytime anywhere you want......i.e. guitar lessons, favorite songs etc....way cool, and now that I have the nutron music player mentioned in another thread....these clips can be added on to your playlist,  WOW!... having fun...for you kids out there, when some of us were young we had to try to slow down a record to hear what the player was doing... ...now its insane how much access we have to watch, listen or slow down music, without changing the pitch.... ..Steffan, (with part of his foot in the 21st century... )

I remember party lines and the old switchboard operaters back when I was a kid. I think our phone # had 4 digits.

I'll tell sniper you said hi when he returns. He's out running with his posse. I've adopted a stray with two kittens. They think Sniper is the big kahuna.

We kids used to call my spinster aunt who lived across town (small town) just to hear her answer, in her own inimitable sing-song-whiny voice, "1-8-2-2." She would never just say, "hello."
Of course, we'd hang up every time, having no fear of caller ID in the '50s.

Funny thing, I don't remember our 4-digit number!
Guess I never phoned home.

Ah, memories,
Joe

People are concerned about privacy these days, a good thing, but back then when you got your own private line, it was a really big deal.....amazing what's happened in 1 lifetime... I saw an old ad for 'That Girl' on Me TV the other day, they show all old stuff, and she was saying watch it in color, or black and white just watch it...  probably lots of folks out there that have never seen a black and white T.V. or imagined the cost of a color TV when they first came out.....major bucks.... and there were just a very few color shows on each week....Steffan

My old favorites on the early TVs were the vertical and horizontal hold switches. They were strategically placed on the back of the cabinet where you could barely reach them and see the screen at the same time.

Progress in some areas....congress in others! :?

The first phone I remember or became aware of in my own home was when I was about 3 or just turned 4. We lived in Woodland Hills, CA. It was a private line. My grandparents, who then lived in West Los Angeles, had a party line. I thought that was the most fascinating thing in the world!! I remember sneaking in to listen to who was talking on the phone. You had to talk on the phone in the hallway and just stand right there.

Also, remember those early numbers had prefixes, that were names with abbreviations that you'd dial. I think ours was Exbrook, which you dialed E - X and then the number. Each number had 3 letters associated with it. Looking at this picture of one, I see there was no letter "Q" for some reason.

When I moved to Las Vegas from Los Angeles going on 7 years ago, I bought a cell phone first thing when I got here. I've never even had a land line for that amount of time. I don't really see any reason for a telephone # attached to my house. It's a whole different way of thinking of communication, you know?

Funny how much things have changed.

Back in the days when the phone company owned everything, including the wiring in your house, my grandfather did some unauthorized wiring so he did not have to pay for extension phone lines. I didn't want to know how he obtained the handsets  But whenever we made a long distance call we had to use a particular phone. To the phone company the unauthorized equipment looked like it belonged to the other family on the party line and they were not happy paying for "our" long distance calls.

For folks still using a computer I have been quite pleased with DownloadHelper for Firefox as a means to accumulate YouTube videos. In case it comes up, I maintain that if it is posted on YouTube, remains on YouTube (thus not pulled by a content owner) and I do not repost or share, that my local copy is allowed.
