On today's play list. I'm not gonna lie, but this isn't my favorite X-500. The Duncan Antiquity P-90s work better for me in a solid/chambered body (Bluesbird) or thin maple hollow body (Starfire III) better than in this full size archtop with lam spruce top. I wish they had a little more chime and a little less midrange. Maybe an underwound P-90 would be a better choice.

I like mine a lot but I need to take better pictures of it.

Interesting observation about the pickups. The midranginess of the P90s combined with the deeper body does make it a bit fat sounding but I kind of like it because it's still brighter than humbuckers and bright enough for me on the bridge and middle positions.

Weirdly I didn't record neck specs, but in my review of the sunburst one I had I complained that it had more of a 1 5/8" neck which is odd for a guitar made near the turn of the century (what a weird thing to be able to say about something almost 25 years old).

Where did you get the sunburst Dave Gonzales model? There aren't very many of those.
Guitars are...
2018 X175B (Big Daddy)
2001 X500T
2010's X175 Rare Manhatten Black
X550P

After searching for 20 years, I purchased the X550P for way too much money out of Germany about a year ago. After Fender Master Builder Chris Flemming built it, it was brought to a German guitar show, where it was purchased from Guild.

I can't say I'm all that surprised- it's a huge, deep body, Duncan antiquity p90's are great pickups, but very thick and midrangey sounding, and the neck pickup sits very close to the neck.

A friend of mine was so enamoured with the clarity and "twang with grunt" of my '62 X175 that he had Curtis Novak wind two Franz clone bobbins, but on Gibson dogear p90 baseplates - I bet a set of those would make your X500T sound twangier and less like a big fat smokey Gibson. (Not that there's anything wrong with that - I love P90 archtops)

PacificaGuitars - that sunburst 550P is killer!!!

Hey, Jeff... There was a Dave Gonzales who took the marketing mantle at Guild back for a while during the New Hartford, CT days. We spoke with him at one of the Let's Meet Guild events... Is that who this refers to? Probably not, right?

It refers to Dave Gonzalez of Roots Rock cult band "The Paladins", it was a short lived, well deserved sig model for him - the "P" is for paladin

maybe a charlie christian pickup, a TK smith pickup ,or a GFS P90 would suit you better.

i once pulled a very expensive boutique P90(brand withheld) out of a guitar and put in a cheap all parts P90,the all parts P90 sounded better in that guitar.

GG, are you retired or somethin'? You're playing your guitars a lot (which I do too, though I now only have two Guilds and nothing else).

I'm thinking a DeArmond style pickup, from TV Jones or Duncan would do the trick. Magnets for pole pieces up the brightness/attack considerably.

Sweet guitars in this thread.
