Better not to kill spiders, AND never do it with a flamethrower!

When the large garden spiders show up at the end of the summer, they like to spin their 8-foot (or more) webs near the front and back doors. When they do I like to leave the outside lights on for them - helps them to get fed.

My oldest brother has a great story from the early/mid 70's where he and a friend were walking home from a Boy Scout meeting in uniform and cut through a large field on NASA (Goddard) property and were stupidly flicking matches off a matchbook w/ one finger, sending the lit matches through the air. Needless to say, the arid field caught fire and spread out of control. They ran, but stayed in the area. When the numerous trucks from several fire depts came, they saw my brother and his friend attempting to stomp out the burning grass as it approached the parking lot. Fast forward to about a month later at the next Boy Scout meeting....where my brother and his friend were given an accommodation by the Fire Chief and Mayor for being the first on the scene to help put out a fire ....that they started. They even made the local paper. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: (Took him over 20 years to come clean on that one!)

That's a great story. I know exactly what they were doing and I stopped doing it after a match head got stuck on my finger. Hurt like h*ll.

Yep. It sticks to your skin and leaves a hard wart like blister that hurst like hell. I remember back then, boys used to play those "smart" games....where you space your feet apart and the other person throws a knife, sticking it in the ground while trying to get it as close to your shoe as possible. Well we did the same flicking matches at bare feet! Kids!:cautious: And people think today's kids are nuts. I call that selective memory!😉

This reminds me of the teenager who started a fire in Oregon in 2017 after blowing off fireworks into a canyon, despite people around him telling him to stop. The fire destroyed more than 48,000 acres of the Columbia River Gorge. He was sentenced to 1,920 hours of community service and ordered to pay $36.6M in restitution, although it's not expected that he will.
