I have a 14 hour road trip staring me in the face, as I have to pick my son up from college in May. In order to keep me awake, I'm planning on taking plenty of disco.
Found out on the trip to Europe that disco is perfect for keeping you awake when you are sleep deprived. ;-)

I don't like to hear the same artist doing a whole album at one time. For me, putting a bunch of my favorite artists on an MP3 or memory stick and random is the only way to go. I look forward to the next song every time because I don't have a clue as to what it will be. What I do know is that I will like it because I programed it.

Also, perhaps some instrumental guitar, jazz or otherwise, like some John McLaughlin acoustic stuff, or the great Michael Hedges.

Second that, for "jazz in general". These days I use the car time primarily to listen to new stuff and most of that time is on the PBS jazz station. Only once or twice in a quarter do I bring along a CD for refresher or first audition.
Last 5 CD's in car?
Kenny Burrell Midnight Blue
Bangles' Doll Revolution (GUILD content!! :D )
Hendrix South Saturn Delta
Eric Johnson Alien Love Child
Zappa Shut Up'n Play Yer Guitar Some More

Well, it all depends on what you're riding in/on, where you're going, for what, who you're with and what day of the week it is, but one thing's for sure, music is a must. :)
I gotta agree with Terry here.... but if you're hitting the road with a special someone (or even if you're not) I like this one ---->>> http://youtu.be/Z06Xa8mM6P0

Have to agree with Sandy, "Willin'" is a good 'un, though I think more of Linda Ronstadt than Little Feat...

Frono, you are a man of extremes! Wagner vs Jefferson Airplane. Wow. I bow in your presence. I am not worthy...

About a good a road song as I have found is Mary Chapin Carpenter's "The Way I Feel," which by the way is about being on the road. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3Ujc-Mz3N4

Having been lured into SiriusXM radio by the evil Hyundai-America empire, I find myself listening between the 60's Channel (60's on 6), Bluegrass Junction and Doctor Radio (81)...NPR and books on CD are always good if Sirkku is in the car...

But ultimately, there are the two "Desert Island" CD's, Jeff Beck's "Truth" and "The Very Best of Booker T and the MG's"

Some Gilbert and Sullivan songs are sometimes a nice change of pace.

Funny you should mention Mr. Beck as I was also thinking of two of his tunes which have outright "road themes":
"Highways" on "the Orange album"and "Freeway Jam" on Blow by Blow and Live with the Jan Hammer Group.

I love a solution given to me a few years ago:
MP3 players with an FM transmitter run as little as 10 or 15 bucks.
This one is from Advanced Auto Parts.
A 32 gig memory stick holds around 7,000 songs.

Which certainly beats a cassette mix-tape with auto-reverse on your player! :D

Russ,

Thanks for the tip. I used to have an FM transmitter for my iPod, but after a car ransacking, it was stolen. I have tried looking for a new one but I do not see them for sale anymore as most new cars come with an auxiliary port and do not require FM transmitters anymore.
