The wife was flipping channels last night and as she went by PBS 9, there was this guy doing crazy things to an acoustic guitar. I made her stop and go back.

Interesting world. Turn over another rock and there's another scary guitar player you didn't know about who's been sitting there woodshedding. I had no idea who this guy was until the fund raising break. Tommy Emmanuel! Never heard of him.

I might be right in saying that what he was doing was more entertaining than playing - the brightly colored smoke and shiny mirrors of grandstanding - cheesy showoff stuff - racing all over the fretboard - playing to the side of the toast that is buttered - but I am absolutely right in saying that that I would be an idiot to say that he can't play or that what was beneath all the smoke was not entirely solid. Very high speed playing with very clean articulation given the speed of execution and the strength of the attack. What I saw him play was a kind of stylistically mixed thing with his single note soloing being a bit like Django Reinhardt on steroids and amphetamines but without Django's swing.

Very, very, very scary, boys and girls: http://www.tommyemmanuel.com/

I would probably go see him if he came here. Scary technique.

Tommy is quite the entertainer, but I prefer him in a more restrained mode where his playing really shines musically.
Two with Muriel Anderson, who says you can't make a gut string useful in bluegrass (where she started)

I'm with you on this one. Never any doubt about his talent, however.
Chet made simply incredible music and to say that he was "restrained" would be an understatement. "Django Rinehardt on steroids." That's funny.

Different strokes.....:friendly_wink:

I only got to see him play for a few minutes before the fund raising break kicked in (a very small sample to base any judgment on, yes). But being a sucker for displays of technical virtuosity, I found it all quite hypnotic despite my musical reservations - I have lots of guitar gymnastics records in my collection - some of them I love dearly even if I don't find them musical. The wife, who has a very astute musical ear, was not hypnotized, however. Her pronouncement was that there was nothing happening, nothing holding things together, no development, no direction - just a bunch of high tech noise. And I had to agree. And although I wanted to keep watching, I was in a sort of Flight of the Conchords "It's Business Time" mood and felt it prudent to concede and not demand control of the remote.

Nice. A bit sloppier than what I saw in the concert footage, but then it seems to have been an impromptu and informal delivery here. What I saw him playing was sort of almost kind of a de-swingafied French gypsy Jazz thing with bluesy chords thrown in. Quite the chops in both, though.

Nice Larrivee in his hands BTW. Canadian luthiers rule or drool or something even if they sell out and move to California. But hey, we still got Jean's apprentice Linda Manzer.

Sorry. I somehow skipped over this. This is a very different Tommy than the one I saw. He is listening to the other players, engaging with them and supporting what they do - not trying to upstage them. Chops are used judiciously to contribute to the whole. There is no effort made to be the star.

Maybe if he listened to himself as a solo act and gave himself the same kind of support ....? :tongue-new:

Could be Guild and be sold and moved to California. I believe they'll both be in Oxnard too!

Linda's Metheny-Manzer Signature 6 is my ultimate drool.

Keep in mind, the Purple Haze rendition was an internet challenge. He got to hear the song a few times and crank out HIS version withing 30 minutes or something. Very spur of the moment.

Whole heartedly agree, and sort of what I said above. Doesn't matter, though. It's pretty cool anyway.
