so forget the song itself, i put the iphone inside the soundhole and just rested it, kind of locked in place.
then i hit record on the camera.

while i was going for a different initiative or reason for the small effort, i realized while producing song in camtasia that the top was moving a lot.

it's pretty wild to watch...

Now I know why they call it the "soundboard".

That is really interesting! I've seen cell phone recordings of the strings wobbling, but never the top...

We've talked about guitars "opening up" before. It would seem the top of a more "open" guitar would move more than one "less open"? Right?

Totally walrus. I now realize that the term opens means the top must move more, has relaxed a bit, breathes more. It must almost loosen or stretch over time.

Top movement is critical but it's a balance between enough movement and too much. I bought an old Epiphone Sheraton Jumbo Acoustic (they did electrics with that name as well) and someone had removed all the back bracing and some of the top bracing as well. That soundboard moved alright but it was like this huge over-echoey box that all this sound came out of and you had no control over it and it wouldn't stop!!! So movement is good, and breaking in is good, but there's such a thing as too much. All that aside I enjoyed the hell out of the video, Woody, because that's just so cool!! I wanna do that now!! Probably won't but I want to!!

Not so sure that effect is the top moving that much. I think you’re seeing more of the sound waves interacting with the light reflecting off the top as well as the soundboard movement compounded by the photo mechanical restraints of the camera itself. Sorta like a film of a car moving forward but it’s wheels appear to be moving in reverse. Then again I have a BFA from art school so what do I know. None the less very cool vid and song.

If you lay a level string just over the top and see what happens.....
