After Steve sent me this beauty to install Guild HB1s I wrote up this article where I wrote that I was sorry I ever let it go. Steve contacted a short time thereafter and offered it back to me and we struck a deal which was finalized today. Here it is with those mint NOS gold HB1s that the amazing Hans procured for Steve. I even upgraded the screws to gold. :)

It's not a perfect collector's Nightbird since the bridge and tailpiece aren't correct, but it plays like a dream and with the new HB1s, sounds *amazing*! That works for me!

So now I get to use this on myself.

Thanks all. I need to make a recording of all the tones, because it's very versatile and sounds amazing.

I hope one day she finds a permanent home... so she won't keep getting passed from one guy to the next. :love_heart:

I'm notoriously fickle with my guitars, but some have stayed forever. My Guild SF4, for example. This one is really magic with the HB1s in it. I swear I can get P90-type growl, vintage HB tones, creamy Santana leads, Fender position 4 tones, and everything else I can throw at it. The only reason I sold it in the first place was because of the Fender HB1s, so now it's just perfect.

Congrats! I've thought on & off about replacing my modded Nightbird's DiMarzios with HB-1s (or TV Jones Classics, or Lollar Firebirds, or…etc.) but then I plug it in and re-remember that as-is it provides a different & useful tonal range to my other guitars. But those gold pickups do look handsome…

Congratulations, it's a beautiful instrument.

I read your blog piece on replacing the pickups in the Guild Nightbird, and was intrigued enough to start shopping around for one. Just acquired a 1989 Nightbird. Thanks for the inspiration!

After reading your piece on replacing the pickups on the Nightbird, I have a couple of questions. What year was the guitar made, and did it come originally with Fender humbuckers or EMG pickups?

Thanks!
