I think it's broken, Joe. I don't see any birds, flora, fauna, mountains, seascapes, sunsets or your wife canoeing in the Sound.

It's an entirely On Topic image! :D

Just kiddin'

I'll stow the sarcasm.

Sarcasm is welcome, especially from the 5-0-9.

Thanks for the feedback,

I'll second that Joe. In fact, I'm toying with the idea of getting Mrs. West a camera for Christmas, but I only have a few requirements......

1) Needs to cost less than $500!

2) Needs to be able to take bird/deer shots from a mile away!

3) Needs to be a name brand quality camera!

I don't ask for much, do I?

Any suggestions? :)

I just hooked up a new computer to add to the four we already have, but the capacity for photos is much enlarged. Add to that a new 2 TB external hard drive and I'm deep into the evening!
The computer also has a new system to decipher, and it's just different enough to be challenging.

Seems like it's working fine and my photos....wow!

Stay tuned,

Well, Jim, we can start by making it a Nikon and cross the brand off the list.
Do you want interchangeable lenses or just a single fixed lens with a good optical zoom?
I can shop a little with this criteria.

She used to have an SLR with a 200 mm telephoto lens Joe. She wants a DSLR, and to really be able to reach out and grab the wildlife. I know that's a lot to ask in that price range, but does such a camera exist? I don't suppose it would have to be an SLR.

I always encourage folks to set their budget first, and then shop in that range. I think if you push it to 5 bills, you should be able to find something really decent.

Stay tuned,

Any suggestions on where to look and what to look for? All I know how to do is push the button, other than that, I'm totally ignorant.

Get the Camera and a smaller lens to start.
Add the telephoto lens later.
This will get you a good camera within your price range.

Hey!!! Hey!!!! Just in time. Gypsy has been wanting a better camera and I've been pretty much clueless about what to get her. Well, I'm still a bit clueless; like translating mm to actual distance and clarity. But thanks for asking Joe's advice there West. I'm gonna take it and get Gypsy that camera.

Peace

Wow . . . 36x optical zoom. 8)

With a big zoom, a decent tripod might also be a good idea.

The Nikon D3100 should be around $500. My wife just bought the Nikon D5100 off of Joe's suggestion via PM. Wonderful camera and our first DSLR. We even bought a 55-300mm lens for it.

I bought a telescope from this outfit a while back.......seemed a good dealer to me.

Again keep in mind that I'm pretty dumb when it comes to stuff like cameras, but I can't seem to find out if additional lenses are adaptable to this particular camera? Nor can I figure out what the equivalent, seperate telephoto the lens that is on this camera might be equal to? In other words, can you stick a telephoto lense on it? If you can't, what power telephoto lense would this be the equivalent to? I also am having a tough time determining how long a video one could shoot with this thing.

It definately looks like a bargain though with all of the features. and I think with her grandaughter, and another on the way, Mrs. West would also love the video feature.

You can read the full description, specs, etc., if you just scroll down from the ad. This one has a fixed lens so it's not interchangeable.
You just have to experiment with any camera you choose and work it to death while you figure out how to get the best out of it. There's a definite learning curve involved.
