Hey all. With the understanding that, typically, sound-hole pickups are inferior for amplifying acoustic guitars because they basically just turn an acoustic guitar into a bad electric guitar, Sunrise sound-hole pickups are the exception. I recently installed a new Sunrise in my F512 and it sounds wonderful!

I have a Sunrise and I like it. I think they tend to work better on bigger guitars, because the weight of the pickup will kill the response of a small guitar like an F20 or even an LG2 Gibson.

That said, the weight has a dampening effect on the top's 'feedback-ability', so it can be a good thing, too. The Sunrise buffer boxes are a good match to the pickups, too, if you don't have one.

I particularly appreciate using a Sunrise when there aren't enough mic inputs on the mixer at a gig. When that happens, I just plug my 'Sunrised-acoustic' into the same guitar amp I'm using for my electric guitar!

I have had the same results with a Dean Markley Pro Mag.
When plugged directly into my PA, it makes my 6 strings sound like a cheep electric but it does a good job with my 12 strings.
Even better if I run it through my Crate Acoustic Amp first and then through the PA.

Could it be the overtones produced by a 12 string that makes the difference?

There are a few exceptions to the old rule now. Both the Baggs M1 and the Fishman Rare Earth pickups should be added to the list of magnetic serve acoustics very, very well.

I use a Rare Earth Humbucking pickup on my DV4 and the sound smooth and balanced. I love it.

I have a fishman in My F20, an active humbucker & like it a lot.

Back a couple years I ran across this site featuring Sunrise PU's.

Scroll about 2/3 down on the 1st page & there are several excellent audio clips.

I agree about the Baggs M1. I have the M1 Active in my F212, and although I don't use it too often, it sounds very good when I do. Someplace in a drawer I think I still have a DeArmond soundhole 12 string pickup from the 60s. I'll have to dig it out and see how it sounds with modern amplification.
