Has anybody seen another one of these or know much about them. It's a Starfire V XD SB serial # 63637 it's a Starfire V that is built like an arch top rather than a simi hollow. It was my late guitar teachers that he bought new and I just had it given to me as a gift! Also, how do I post pictures?

For pics, you need to host them elsewhere and link to them here.

That's a beautiful guitar! I'm sorry you came by it under such unfortunate circumstances.

Hans will be around soon to chime in. Hans is the author of The Guild Guitar Book, and if anyone knows about your guitar he will.

Enjoy it.

Hello ckguitars,

Welcome! Your guitar was part of a small series of Deep Bodied double cutaway Starfire guitars that were first listed in the November '69 price list.

In that price list only 2 models were listed:

the Deep Starfire V available in Sunburst and Blonde
the Custom VII available in Sunburst, Blonde and Amber.

From what I've seen so far the XD designation was only used on the labels and was not used in Guild literature.

It turned out that these Deep Starfire models were not a commercial success and they were no longer listed in the 1972 price list.
Your guitar was completed during the year 1972. During this particular period Guild did not keep records re. the number of each model that they were making and consequently there are no totals available for the Deep Starfire models.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Sometimes I think the only thing better than a great pic of a nice vintage Guild is Hans telling us information about the guitar from his vaults.

Thanks, Hans!

Hans, how similar is this to the Bert Weedon model. Wasn't it a deep double cutaway hollow body as well?

Wasnt Gibson making a deep body double cutaway model as well? Maybe an ES-150?

They did make the Barney Kessel Model which was a deeper double cut away Hollowbody from 1961-1974 if I recall correctly. Here are a few Pics.

Oh that's interesting, I always associated him with the ES-175 and got curious to see if it was related to the Barney Kessel. Search for "ES-175 double cutaway" yielded a prototype from 1985 (!):

But that's as far as I dug.
The Kessel certainly looks like it could have been an ES-175"D", way before that '85 dated "prototype"....

Yes.
Search for that yields:

Forgive me lord for I have looked at other brands with lust in my heart.

The guitar Barney Kessel used for most of his career was a 1946/7 ES-350 with a Charlie Christian pickup. The story is that he never played the Barney Kessel model, perhaps because it was simply a guitar Gibson had already made, and they simply slapped his name on it rather than having BK collaborate on the design. He and Gibson did not get along very well.

oooohhh, "the dirt"!
Thanks buddy.
And you made me realize I was thinking of Joe Pass with the '175.
Is this place great or what?
