On a record cover somewhere there is a picture of Jim Hall playing a Gibson archtop with an HB1 pup in neck position. The pickup appears to be mounted with duct or electrical tape. I will have to go look and see if I can find the album.

Meanwhile ... how to keep the drummer from talking to the media (sincere apologies to real drummers--not talking about you, K?--but you do know who we are talking about, eh?):

Don't know the album picture but there was a Youtube video showing the tape holding the pickup used, which I can't find. Otherwise his ES-175 is shown here in detail (without tape). It has a little Guild humbucker from the 60's, what Guild would call today a LB-1, here in the rare (or less seen) version with the Allen screws as pole pieces. Hans had previously reported such Allen screws for HB-1.

Another guitar Jim Hall used was his 1983 D'Aquisto using indeed a golden HB-1. But I see no tape there and who would tape such a valuable instrument as a D'Aquisto.

Still no album cover but I found the 1973 video with the taped-in Guild mini-humbucker! It's the same ES-175 as shown in post #7 above but obviouly before he fabricated a wooden pickup ring. And he had the pickup mounted 180 deg with the pole pieces away from the neck, you also see the open screw hole from the former P-90 on that guitar.
