Speaking of amps...what to do?

Okay, so I've been thinking lately about the sorry state of my amplification situation and have been pondering off and on what I might acquire to form a more perfect man cave. The recent resurrection of this amp thread gave me the thought of soliciting LTG opinions.

First off, here's what I got:

1990 Marshall JCM900 (model 4100, dual reverb with a 1989 Peavey 4x12 - two Peaveys and two GK's).

The Marshall took a good beating back when I was in a punk band and could really use some professional attention (never mind getting hauled around to shows and occasionally soaked with beer, I'm pretty sure a band that used it one time plugged it into a cab that had a different ohm setting and they didn't switch it on the amp). I had someone work on it once and it helped, but now it has some issues again (like the sound cutting out/dropping when it heats up). Overall, it's a lot more than I need for living room rocking, but after switching out one of the preamp tubes the sound is less shrill and more along the lines of what I want than what this amp was designed for. So if I didn't have to sink some cash into it I'd be content with what I've got.

Now, since the Marshall is kinda gimpy I've been using this little Peavey more lately. Not the best amp and I'd rather just sell it sometime. The best use for it is demonstrated by Luke:

To get to the point: I'd be interested in hearing suggestions from LTG'ers about what to replace the Marshall head with. I'll probably keep the Peavey cab for now even though it's a lot more than I need (and I'll probably look into other speakers at some point too and sell off the cab. But I got it for nothing, so hey). Anyway, without getting into the issue of speakers at the moment, who has recommendations/suggestions for a head? I'm thinking class A tube. I don't play through clean channels much so I'd focus more on gain. And I don't use any pedals or effects. Generally when I plug in (an S-100) what I have in mind is something ranging from the sound of AC/DC or Sabbath to bands with a low, heavy, tuned-down stonerrock sound (e.g., Fu Manchu, Kyuss) - although I have no intentions of setting up a bass rig for guitar like some bands do.

One of my first thoughts on the subject is how good the man cave might look/sound in Orange.

Try a Vox Night Train 15w head. Aside from being able to switch from 15 to 7w modes, select "thick" and you'll get all the crunchy higain you'll need for in house.

Dude, knowing some of the bands you listen to I would say Orange would be a great match. The orange Dark Terror or the Jim Root signature amp. I front and play rock in a stoner/southern hard rock band and get tones similar to Clutch and The Sword with my Risen Blackbird amp. They are pricy, but handwired turret board construction. If you are looking for a lower wattage class a type amp the Risen Claymore is perfect. Plenty of gain on tap and it blows the Tiny Terror to smithereens.

Was just playing the Goddess through my Vibrolux Reverb. It's been living over at a buddy's house. It needs a good going over, but dang, I forgot how good it sounds!

So does Luke just like the Peavey or does it get warm as you use it?

Haha!

Actually, they both like climbing up as high as they can and the Peavey sits on top of the 4x12. It's a favorite feline perch. I'm sure they'd love it more if I put the Marshall through its paces (that thing could heat my whole apartment). Jack runs for cover when I plug in but nothing phases Luke. He would probably soak up the heat while I played and raise up a little kitty paw \m/ in support.

(Somebody with Photoshop skills should concoct a Luke/horns pic. That would be awesome.)

Hey Q, if you`re after that Sabbath, Clutch, Kyuss and Fu manchu sound, check out Bogner amps.
A mate of mine uses the Bogner Shiva head with an Orange 4x10 box and that setup nails
that sound perfectly, "like Marlon Brando, but Bigger !" Good luck with the hunt.

Thanks mate! I'll check it out tomorrow when my internet's back up (typing on the dumb phone now). And oh yes I have the body of John Wilkes Booth. Believe it.
