Similar, but so different...

ES125.jpg

Two single pickup, laminated hollow-body guitars with the same scale length, nut width and body size (almost). The mid-50s ES125 is stock including the original P90, except for the pickguard. The Corona X150 is stock except for a few minor cosmetic tweaks and the addition of a Biltoft blade pickup.

The Guild has a Florentine cutaway, the Gibson is uncut. The f-holes on the Guild are cut thinner, giving a slightly more elegant look.

The neck carve is quite different. The Guild neck is thinner front to back, the Gibson's rounder. Both are 16" wide bodies. The Guild has a 3" deep body, the Gibson is 3.5". The Guild has fat frets, the Gibson's are quite thin.

The original pickup on the Guild was a little nondescript but nice... good for a variety of purposes. The Biltoft blade is darker but beautifully defined. The P90 sounds as a P90 should, crisp and upfront with a great midrange.

The ES125 seems to lend itself well to fingerstyle and has an amped sound that mixes well with acoustic guitars. With a little tube edge to it, the P90 sings the blues pretty well. The X150 sounds best played clean and has a more 'uptown' depth to the tone.

I play them both... on the surface they seem redundant, but the details tell the tale.

If there's a fiddle in the band I'll take the Gibson.

And even though the Gibson may be worth more $ in the current market, if neckties and pianos are involved, I'll take the Guild.

Those two look great.....and appreciate your comparison!

Its what I do......explains my "similar but different" compulsion.

Thanks!

Great critique, Joe, and I love the southwest motif! Further proof that you can never have too many guitars. 8)

Not to be a smart a$$ but just informative; The X-150 has a venetian cutaway.

To be even more informative, 'Venetian' and 'Florentine', when used to describe musical instrument cutaways, are descriptive terms that were (probably) coined by Gibson's advertising folk, way back when.

As such, 'Venetian' refers to a round cutaway, while 'Florentine' is the designation for a sharp cutaway.

As far as I know, this is the basis for the use of these terms in the Guitar world. Since I have never been to Italy, I can't tell you whether citizens of Venice are 'rounder' and residents of Florence are 'sharper' :)

Yes, I've always liked my X-170 when I put its tie on. Of course, the Gibson would probably be okay with a bolo tie.

Thanks for the correction, and thanks to everybody for the nice comments too. The Gibson was my wife's guitar for many years of gigging in the Seattle area (she's a great singer and a solid rhythm guitarist)

and it was used exclusively on her first CD...

but about the time the recording was finished she bought her Broadway (as seen on the album cover) for its bigger acoustic voice and slightly slimmer neck. The ES125 got left behind and I've since adopted it.
