I recently purchased a SF 1 DC and I'm really liking it. The tuners that came with it have some slack in it and it doesn't stay in tune long. Is this normal for a new SF 1?
Any known tuners that I can replace with that doesn't need mods? Thanks in advance.

You can try tightening the screw that holds the cog on. I've seen quite a few tuners that were loose from the factory. Also, the nut slots aren't always cut right. If your strings are going sharp, it's the nut that's the issue. Try some pencil lead shavings or similar.
Hope that helps.

Welcome to LTG! I have the same MIC Guild-branded 18:1 open-back tuners on my S-100 Deluxe. I don't like them for the reason you've observed - they have a lot of play in them even after tightening the button shaft screw and tuner shaft screw. I've tried dropping in two different Grover Sta-Tites (V97 and V98) and they don't fit. I'm afraid there isn't a tuner that will be a drop-in fit and some drilling or filling may be necessary to facilitate a tuner change.

Thanks, that helps to know it's not just my guitar. It's always flat so it seems it's the Guild tuners.

Yes I've already realized those Grovers will likely need the thru hole enlarged. Thanks for the help.

Do you tune the guitar correctly, always up in pitch, this locks the gears.

Is the guitar strung properly, just a couple turns around the capstan, and there are locking technique which I'm too lazy to type out, but quite simple.

Are the strings quality strings and new?

In local marketplace here someone is selling a SF 1 DC - he writes that he has replaced original tuners w Wilkinson tuners - I've sent him a question about them being direct replacements - haven't heard back yet - will report if he answers.

I just got the word from the guy.

No drilling for shafts was needed.
The screwholes did not match.

I replaced the tuners of my NS T-Bird with Sta-tites and had to drill new screw holes. I only peed myself a little while I did the first one but it was actually easy if you're careful about the depth. I watched a YouTube video which helped.

As others have said, tuning stability problems are usually the nut, saddle, or the strings. But it's always possible the tuners could be defective or just crappy
