I think they are generally pretty friendly if you encounter them in the water, this has certainly been the case with some of my friends when kayaking. On the other hand, if you get too close to them on solid ground, they can be really vicious!

There was a news story here involving a sea lion and some killer whales a few years back:

One of my father's friend had two harbour seals jump onto his much larger boat in a similar situation. Harbour seals have much more pleasant dispositions than do sea lions which are aggressive and huge.

General rule of thumb out on Cape Cod is if there's a seal in the water, you get out, due to the sharks.
