I know that I've mentioned this one before, but this time I'll post a photo of a super DVD with one of our favorite Guild players.

It's a very intimate setting and wonderful viewing of a true icon with a couple of great guitars! :D

Enjoy,
Joe

The man had great chops...even before he got his teeth. ..I was heavily influenced by his early albums...crazy driving percussion rhythm strumming, no wonder he goes thru tops the way he does, always a hero of mine, still is..Steffan

Hey joe, hows it going. Richie was just before my time, although have spent many hours listening many of the same bands that also played woodstock. Maybe it was just where I grew up , mmm don't know. Anyway, he has 2 pickguards is it because he beats his tops or just looks.

If you have the Guild Guitar Book, in the foreword on page 6, he explains how the double pickguards came to be. It's all about his style of "attacking" his D40.
If you don't have the book, stop whatever you're doing and go out and get it....now. It's the LTG bible.

Stay in tune,
Joe

Thursday before Woodstock week-end I kinda, sorta, went AWOL with a couple other buddies that were stationed with me in Michigan after Nam. Ritchie was the first to play on Friday and I didn't get to hear him from the beginning. By the end of his set however I was blown away by the performance. And I was well on my way to only remembering bits and pieces of the week-end.

Melanie was sweet and into the party. Now Ravi Shankar I distinctly remember walking away from. I was a biker turned hippie ya know but I had to draw the line somewhere. :) CSN&Y were just o.k. as I remember their harmony being off. I think they were having sound trouble but I don't know. I was kinda out of it. :?

Yeah, RH was cool and it's the only time I've ever seen him live. I'd sure like to do so again.

Peace

Thanks for the heads up Joe. We've seen Richie a few times including a Woodstock reunion thing w/ Melanie and others years ago. Last time was when he and Leo Kottke put on a free outdoor show in Albany after doing a for pay gig in Portland. Sunny summer day in the park listening to Richie and Leo. Doesn't get better than that...

:D Good one Joe, He has a great website too that shares some of his technique secrets , as well as background, etc,......and a place where you can order CDs and that DVD direct from him. he even is signing his latest CD , if you order from that site! And yes, NEVER too late to tune into his music, his latest albums are great and offer some fine views on humanity and how we can all just try to get along better in this world. Not preaching....but reminding us of what we know already, and helping us look at things anew. He is indeed a pleasure to listen to. :D Southern

SG,
You'd really enjoy this DVD.
As I said, it's done in an intimate setting with lots of up-close and personal instruction from Richie about his songs.
I often put Just Like a Woman on repeat and just let it play as background music. One of the best versions I've heard and his guitar work is amazing.

Check it out,
Joe

I remember seeing Richie Havens a few times in the 60s. He was pretty much a fixture in the Boston and Cambridge coffeehouses back in the day. It was great seeing him in those small clubs. He performed on campus in a coffeehouse setting when I was in college and I was just feet away from him. Some folks I knew had been at house gatherings where he performed and said that he was a very nice, gentle soul. He would sometimes perform with teeth and sometimes without. It really changed his look and persona. With teeth, he had sort of a militant bearing and without, a kind of old-times bluesy look. His singing was great either way and his playing, while a bit unorthodox and actually kind of simple, was extremely effective. He remains a favorite of mine with some of his old stuff and some of his new stuff on my car iPod.

As a warning, though, don't get his CD of Beatles and Dylan tunes. Although that was some of my favorite material from his performances, the CD is terrible. Horrible production, with him singing along to a cheesy rhythm box. Really a disservice to an outstanding musician. All his other stuff is great, however.

"Cuts to the Chase" from 1994 is EXCELLENT, although out of print it can be found on Amazon, lots of CRYSTALLINE Guild tone on there, definitely not one of those albums with excessive extra instrumental producer interference. It's got a little bit of world beat sound. I rank this right up there with "High Flyin' Bird" and "Handsome Johnny" from Mixed Bag, the first album, and I like it better than Alarm Clock.

Hi Southern: "Darkness Darkness" is on "Cuts to the Chase", but the standout on that album to me is a cover of Sting's "They Dance Alone". Actually I think it's my favorite Havens album. Good to have while it's still "findable"!
