Well, my 1981 X500 needs a refret after all these years. I spoke with my tech and he mentioned 3 types of fret wire - nickel, stainless steel, and one other kind ("evo"??) that is kind of in between the two in terms of not being as bright as stainless but lasts longer than nickel.
And then there is the choice of how big the frets are - width and height.
Does anyone have any experience/thoughts on this? What is the factory choice for the frets? I don't even know how to describe what the guitar came with.
What are the tonal ramifications? He said stainless is brighter. That seems like it could be a good thing to offset the darker bassy sound of the guitar. But I wouldn't want to put something in that's not really compatible.
I use this guitar for its awesome jazzbox neck pickup tone. No twang or blues or rockabilly, if that makes a difference for this discussion.
Thanks!
Vince
