Can anybody tell me if the X-170 ever came from the factory with a Tune-O-Matic bridge type? There is a guy who's got one for sale on eBay and states that it is all original. I e-mailed him and questioned the veracity of that statement since I thought they all came with compensated rosewood bridges. He replied with a lengthy e-mail that essentially said I was calling him a liar, he was offended, and that I didn't know what I was talking about. Do I, or is he right and his Tune-O-Matic was factory?

Thanks,

Jeff

Just send him the link to a Google image search for "Guild X-170". He'll see that all of the bridges are Ebony (the earlier ones), rosewood, or aluminium (for Guildsby equipped ones.)

Tell him that 'being uninformed' is not the same as 'being a liar'. It probably won't make any difference; just like the non-original bridge should not have an influence on the final selling price!

Sincerely,

Good point Hans. And you're right, it shouldn't make any difference in the price, unless the prospective buyer is a purist who wants it "all original". For anybody else, a wooden bridge/saddle is easy to find, and probably you have one or two correct ones sitting in a drawer somewhere, right? :joyous:

I know the Tune-O-Matic does make a difference in the sound. I put one on my X-170 and it became brighter - a sound I really like, for now.

I've come to believe that someone getting angry when they're questioned or corrected is a textbook sign of a scammer. It's a fake anger intended to intimidate the suckers. Time to walk away.

I think the Seller is okay. He's done a lot of buying on eBay, but no selling before now, so he's probably not up on the usual back and forth between a seller and prospective buyers.

One of the pics shows a 'sliver' of the side of another guitar that he is also selling on eBay a blonde Dobro knock-off. He is also selling a line 6 guitar. He's not trying to get a lot of money for any of the guitars, so if he is a scammer, he is a subtle one.

Of course, I've been wrong before. Last year, I thought I made a mistake but I was wrong.

I got another e-mail that told me how much he appreciated my input and that he had decided to keep the guitar and that he pulled the listing. I didn't get the feeling from the correspondence we had that he was trying to scam anybody. He's just one of those people who at first blush is easily offended, but after he thinks about it a while he calms down and backs off. From what I read in his subsequent e-mails I could probably be friends with the guy.
