He's one of my favorites.

Reminds me of a teenager I know. He got into my friend's old pickup and asked what the handles on the doors were for.
He had never seen manual windows.

How about a manual gear shift :?: Often a problem for US Citizens wh hire a car in the UK
Well, depends on where it's located. Are the column shifts on the right or left side? I know the floor shifts have to be on the left. I also have no idea what the pedal configuration is. In North America, the accelerator is on the right. It's been so long since I've driven one, I have to think about the clutch and brake, but I remember the clutch as on the left and the brake in the middle.

Brad, you are correct regarding the pedals - I haven't seen a column shift in years - always in the middle between driver and passenger in any car I've driven in the last 30 years. Seem to remember my father having a black Austin around 1960 that had a column shift.

Ah yes, the old "Three on the tree"!

Yepp, the linkage wore out after 3 or 4 million shifts & locked up. More'n once I remember the transmission locked in 3rd or whatever, leaning under the car wiggling things around, didn't take but a minute & you were on your way again. .

Good old days, ?? Fordomatic's a good invention in my book, AC is nice too.

I had a buddy in high school whose column-shift transmission was so worn that he could get the thing to shift from 2nd to 3rd by getting the speed just right and then allowing the weight of the lever and knob to drop down by gravity alone and no clutch, no hands. And he didn't even pay extra for the semi-autmatic transmission upgrade.

I had an old Austin, Cambridge in about 73, the column shift was reversed , 4 on the column, I think, maybe not but took a while to figure out that 3rd or 4th was where 1st ought to be, gutless as heck in 1st, thinking about it now maybe it was upside down..  Steffan

A close cousin (above) of the one I learned on. It was amazing just what you could do in second gear.
