As far as the arched vs flat back issue, I know D25's were already made with arched backs in 1975 (as I checked one out for sale that definitely had an arched back).
Mine (a 1972) is obviously a flat back, and is all mahogany, and I believe (but someone by the name of Hans could probably settle the scores here) that the arched back production started around the same time, or shortly after spruce tops made their debut on this model and when we would see a mix of spruce and mahogany tops coming out of Westerly through the end of 1974....
I have been in love with my "punchy" flat back since I met her, but would love to acquire an arched back to make a little comparison demo of both!
Hi Bluesy can't argue with you, they're definitely two different varieties of the same fruit. In fact "punchy" is a great term, my D40's starting to develop it and it's basically the same dimensions/woods as my D25, except it's a flatback..In fact when I jam the D40's my go-to for leads, and the D25 is my go-to for chording.
Is that more than our new friend ever hoped to know?

Very cool to see so many people interested in this topic (OTOH, it is a Guild forum... duhhh)
:? Loved the feedback as did my son. He was blown away by the response and he really feels like the guitar has some value other than $... which is exactly what I was hoping to accomplish. Appreciation of well crafted beautiful instruments and rare finds make this more than just about playing... it is also about sharing and preserving a bit of history.

Don't get me wrong... my fingers are sore from intense over enthusiasm, and my wife is sick of the guitar already (jealous)! I was proud as a peacock showing it to her and she snorted, "that's nice honey, how much did you pay for it again?" This followed by, "Did you really need another guitar?" How do you not laugh at that question? How could anyone ever have enough guitars? The nerve!

I like to use my D-25 when with a group of guitars because it particularly booms out the bass. I prefer the DV-52 for bluegrass because of the clear, even tone across all the strings. For solo work, either works well :D

Guitars and wives? Now that's a completely different thread

I said this on another thread but it fits here too: the prophet said you can have as many wives as you want but you're crazy if you want more than one...on the other hand I can't find where he ever said any thing about guitars!

Welcome to LTG, Ben, and say goodbye to a normal life.
You'll not only become more addicted to Guild guitars but you'll also have a difficult time getting through the day without visiting your fellow afflicteds here!
But it's all good!

Did I miss the link to the pics? Not a hint, just wondering if its embedded somewhere that I cannot find.

Yeah, the new GAD version is nice, but way too much glossy lacquer for my taste, and I am a gloss-finish kinda guy! I am sure yours is a stunner...

Thanks Hans!
That confirms what I observed on some examples of arched backs from 1974/75....
Really great to have your encyclopedic knowledge of Guild so readily available! (And sorry for having missed the reference to an already over one year old post of yours..I could have just pasted the link as you did)

Oh I have found my 2nd home! I love my Guilds and I love my wife and thank the Lord she loves them as much as I do! I bought my D25 new back in 92 and it has the arch. THis is a terrific guitar for recording. A mic close to the sound hole, one pointed at the neck and an overhead a few feet back and the sound is just rich. It accepts alternate tunings very well also. That huge body loves G tunings! And my wife just shines when I play it...life it good!
