Pearl Jam 20, the film by Cameron Crowe honoring Pearl Jam's 20 years as a band, played in select theatres around the country and is now available on DirecTV. I had tickets to a show but couldn't go, but I did watch it last night on TV and it was pretty well done. It will air on PBS on Oct. 21st.

I was a fan for years, but saw them live for the first time in Minneapolis in 1998, and was blown away by the experience, specially when this happened ... keep in mind that as the crowd roar gets louder -- and it was a lot louder in person than on this fan-shot video -- the band wasn't doing anything at all, just feeling the love from the crowd.

But ... Can't find a better band! 8)
And...there's been Guild content over the years!.
(Can't find it now but there's at least one pic of Eddie Vedder with a Jumbo, probl'y F50? at one of Neil Young's Bridge School benefit concerts. Speaking of which, there's another point on their scoreboard of humanitarian efforts.)

It's even more special given that all this love came right after this little mix-up with Stone's setup.

First heard them in 2004 - they were showing Even Flow video on VH1 and that was a turning point for me. Their last record though is... well different. Riot Act and a bunch of others were not as popular of course as the first three. But in case of Yield, No Code this is not the matter of low quality. However their latest album fails to capture me in any way. There are a couple of OK tracks IMHO. Vedder's voice has been deteriorating since 2002.

In my opinion Matt Cameron should drum in Soundgarden. I'm not saying his work in PJ is not on par with their other drummers but for some reason his drums stuck out in the mix like a sore thumb. Their live show though are spectacular. I wish I could go to at least one.

P.S. Don't think that it is bashing. I'll definitely try to catch PJ20 on DVD when it comes out.

Regarding Eddie's voice, I agree with you on the more "aggressive" Pearl Jam songs, his voice (naturally) is not what it used to be. In general, I've always been a bigger fan of their more mellow or acoustic work, like "Elderly Woman...", or "Nothingman", or "The End", etc. Vedder's voice on those is perfect - he really puts emotion into his singing.

If you don't have it, I would strongly recommend the "Into the Wild" soundtrack CD, solo Eddie, with some great songs. Then, my second recommendation would be to watch the movie or read the original book, which are also very good!

True, though I saw them with Jack Irons in 1995 and he was the worst. I rate Abbruzzese as their best.

If Andrew Wood didn't die in '90 there wouldn't be any PJ20. You guys would be watching MLB20......

Pearl Jam was one of the bands that really shaped my musical being. The fact that McCready and Gossard used heavy strings (12's, I believe) influenced me in my star-studded eyes to use heavy strings on my electrics (although who knows how accurate those guitar magazines were...). To this day I still can't play anything thinner than '11s. And that's just on the technical side of things.

One of my fav's was Yellow Ledbetter. It totally got me into the strat sound. I found this quote on Youtube to be quite entertaining and an accurate description of the song:

When I was a teenager I liked this song because how it made me feel. Back then I did? not speak english at all.

I have spoken English for over 10 years now and I still can't understand anything he says :{

The song still stirs my heart.

Here's how Mike McCready, in the Lost Dogs liner notes, describes Yellow Ledbetter: A riff loosely based on ... somthing I had during the Ten sessions. I thought it was pretty. Eddie started making up words on the spot and we kept them. I still don't know what it's about and I don't want to! I love it. Fans like it too!

What Walrus said about "Into the Wild!" the soundtrack, the book and the movie. As for a book about Pearl Jam, I'd highly recommend "Five Against One" by Kim Neely.

And as for Eddie's voice and some of the mellower songs, I've always loved "Hard to Imagine" which is on Lost Dogs.

jcwu, have you heard any of Gossard's stuff from Mother Love Bone? Some pretty cool stuff there too.

Didn't know they used heavy strings, I got into Fender Bassmans because these guys used them (well that's what the magazines told me as well).

Cool thread! Their catalog is very diverse and I think it serves as a pretty good testament to the guys' talent.

Black still gives me goose bumps every time I listen to it. Although not the original version from the record but the one that Epic put out on the greatest hits compilation. I believe this version features Dave Abbruzzese on drums. I agree that he fits the best to the overall sound of the band (despite what PJ members say about him i.e. him being one-dimensional drummer). Jack Irons I think was the worst live but not on the records. His drumming is really interesting on No Code and on Yield. It's got a very loose flow to it.

I like Cameron's drumming on certain songs but not on those played by the Abbruzzese and Irons. I think it is strictly the matter of hearing the song first in a certain arrangement and falling in love with it. While a certain band member adds something new to the song by changing the fills or notes he plays for me it's not the case with PJ drummers. I'm kinda traditional in that aspect.

When they first toured here we only went from albums and the occasional live filmed clip you'd see on TV. Ten was recorded by Dave Krusen and the Alive clip is actually Matt Chamberlain bashing away on the cymbals.

Rock up to watch them play at a tennis court (didn't realise it, but broke my wrist earlier that day so was in a bit of pain) and there's Jack Irons up the back with a 4 piece drum kit and 1 crash and 1 ride cymbal! Now that was disappointing!

Did get to meet the guys though and get my PJ T-shirt signed!
