Although I would not have expected this to work in NYC, it is a well known phenomenon in India (Calcutta?) in the jewelry district, was a picture in an old National Geographic showing a woman panning in a street gutter.
In the 50s when I visited relatives in Chitown I would visit one of my uncles and his son who were upscale jewelers, gate controlled entry and all that in a very discreet office, no store front. They had some interesting rocks. Anyways......, since I was sort of a rugrat, i would look under the tables, around the moldings, and they would give me five bucks for any diamonds I found. One day I made $25, a lot of money in the 50s. Probably as much or more than my father made in a day.
