For those who haven't heard, Aridzone State U maneuvered to get Obama to speak at our commencement and then declined the de rigueur bestowal of an honorary degree. As a world-crass university, we can crow about not only insulting the Prez, but also controlling him, because he can't back out.

And the entertainment was Alice Cooper. What a disgrace.

I thought you were joking & looked it up. Truth is stranger than fiction.

I lived next-door in New Mexico for many years and went to UNM... it was kind of a split-personality neighborhood at the time. U of NM had hippies and cowboys and nobody in the middle (well, except science majors). For the Senior Prom we had to have two separate dances, the Turtles & Ray Price!

Jeff,

It's bad enough to put Alice Cooper out there, but nauseating that they would have him sing "School's Out for Summer."

Well we got no choice,
All the girls and boys
Makin all that noise
'Cause they found new toys.
Well we can't salute ya,
Can't find a flag.
If that don't suit ya,
That's a drag.

School's out for summer.
School's out forever.
School's been blown to pieces.

No more pencils.
No more books.
No more teacher's dirty looks.

Well we got no class.
And we got no principles.
And we got no innocence.
We can't even think of a word that rhymes.

Out for summer.
Out till fall.
We might not go back at all.

I guess the organizers thought the President's name is "Bar Rock."

AJ,

I've been a Ray Price fan all of my life. He had some of the greatest players of all time--Buddy Emmons, Bobbe Seymour, etc. As a kid, I didn't know there were segregated forms of music, so I thought Ray Price, Frank Sinatra, and Nat Cole all fit together. And that's what Buddy and Bobbe play--every kind of music. Alice Cooper is just noise.

Yes, it's a joke that ASU wouldn't honor a law prof from U Chicago. And that's how Obie treated it. He made jokes about it.

But this treatment of him is what you'd expect in the state that was last to approve MLK Day.

Hi Darryl ... I guess ASU's conduct was payback for O having beaten what's-his-name ... you know ... that home town boy in the election. I enjoyed O's remark about having the IRS audit the board of regents or whoever they having faking it there on the back line.

Gee ... and to think we used to be so proud of you ... :(

Darryl-
Given those 2 choices, I went to see Ray and the Cherokee Cowboys. I'm a huge fan and I think I have every recording Ray ever made. I'm playing City Lights in my head as I type! Anyway, concerning the missed Honoraria... I wonder if it might have been more appropriate to have Tom Petty.

Same thing at Oklahoma State...one bar called George's Stables, where you can still see where Walt Garrison drove his Cadillac and horse trailer he bought with his Dallas Cowboys signing bonus through the wall, and across the street, Eskimo Joes, home of hairy legged women and tie dye!
