It has arrived and I've finally gotten around to taking a picture, which we all know is the most important part of a post!
Build quality is excellent, I'm very impressed. It arrived completely flaw free. Did a normal setup, very minor intonation tweaks and such, otherwise ready to go out of the box. The pups sound great, although not an exact match of the original HB1's. They seem a little more harsh, but then they haven't had 40 years to mellow them out a bit. It's nothing horrible, just slightly more sizzle in the upper frequencies. I might still need some height adjustments to dial it in. The neck is a tad wider, and the headstock is definitely smaller in every way than previous generations. It's narrower and thinner. The Grover open tuning machines are actually really attractive and hold tune well. The frets are probably the biggest difference, they are tall but narrow. I miss the phase switch but it's not make or break. If I feel adventurous in the future I might research adding one. I did follow Hagmeat's example (thanks!) and changed the switch tip to chrome, and the truss rod cover to a traditional Guild "bell". That amber switch tip belongs on a well aged Les Paul, not an S-100, and the cover although nice, is a bit busy, competing with the inlay logo and 3 line chesterfield. The screw holes are exactly the same so no extra drilling to change it out. Overall, this is a great new generation of the S-100, it is it's own thing. For what I paid, ($640 shipped with hard case) for a brand new guitar, this is an amazing deal. If Guild can get these into stores and into peoples hands to try them out, I'm willing to bet they'd sell quite a few of them.

Nice group of S-100s, Alan!

This makes me want to try one out. I've never had the opportunity to play one. I know, lame, right? I didn't know that the new ones didn't have the phase switch.

I also noticed that the second one has the tailpiece more closely mounted to the bridge. Hans mentions that this happened around 1976 with M-75s to increase the downward pressure on the bridge, however, your other ones seem to have the tailpieces mounted farther away. Curious? Do you notice a difference?

The change happened in mid-'75: tailpiece moved closer to the bridge and the neck set with a steeper angle more like a Gibson. Changed the string tension and feel of the S-100 quite a bit. The NS model has a different bridge so even though the tailpiece is further back the string tension is better than the pre-'75's, as is the case with the '90's reissues.

I wish there were a Guild dealer anywhere near me. I'd love to play a NS. Probably could find a cheap used one and just "rent" it.

That's a pretty good deal you got there Alan! Makes the loins tingle a bit! For that price I would consider shipping one into Oz. Congrats on the addition & enjoy it to the fullest.

Any chance of the bridge bottoming out on these NS reissues like they sometimes did on the early 70's ones?

I have been gigging with mine for a year now and other than the tone pots loosening up it has been trouble free. It still plays like a dream. My band mates squealed when I didn't buy a Gibson but now they like my sound more and more each time we play. Does anyone have an idea who manufactures the HB -1 pickup for Guild? They did a fine job!
