It has arrived! http://www.letstalkguild.com/ltg/showthread.php?186050-1996-Guid-S100-in-White-on-Buffalo-CL-800

The good: It is an original white, and has all original parts, including case. The frets are in pretty good shape. It's got a real good yellowing over all, and hasn't had any *major* damage.

The bad: The previous owner apparently had no idea how to maintain a guitar, and also didn't handle it with much care. Dings and chips all over, nothing horrible, but I'd rate it cosmetically at about a 6-7. The headstock inlay is pretty crackled, the fretboard is grimy, it's had a lot of sudden temperature changes in it's life, and he sanded the back of the neck with probably a 400 grit paper instead of something lighter like he should have used. At least he didn't go through the color finish. There is plenty of tarnish on the frets and parts. The binding finish is pretty crackled too. The case is in pretty good shape except it's musty smelling, which gives me a little pause.

The ugly: I haven't had a chance to thow a straight edge on the neck, but it looks like it's curving up and needs a truss adjustment. The bridge is set really low to compensate. Dummy had freakin' 12's or even heavier gauge on it too. They barely fit into the stop holes. There is some binding separation near the nut, but it's all there and just needs to be re-glued.

I'll have more details and pix when I can, I know, I know, PICTURES!!!

If it cleans up with some tender loving care, it'll be cool. Scarred, but otherwise alive. Survivor mojo!

800 plus 50 for shipping. It's right at the price edge for it's condition, but as long as I can deal with the issues, I say it's a good deal. If I find things that are more difficult to address, I'm going to hit him back for a partial refund. I paid via Paypal, so I think buyer protection (which is usually heavily favoring the buyer in experience) will be in effect, even though he's a private seller and not a retailer. As a precaution I saved all the emails and had him invoice me.

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, .... pictures soon!

Those musty smelling cases can sometimes clean up pretty well if you have the luxury of leaving them open outside in the hot beaming sunlight for several hours a day, for several days or weeks, as necessary...of course tending to the case, flipping it over, opening the storage compartment and all, generally just doing anything and everything you can to naturally deodorize it without using cleaning chemicals that may harm the guitar. If it's in really bad shape and you use use cleaners, that might be ok just make sure you really bake it out in the sun and cook out anything that could harm the guitars finish. The white S-100 is a rare find. Clean that guitar up (and the case) and you done well. Id maybe ask for a few bucks back though no matter what, if the condition was significantly misrepresented...as the worst that can happen is they say "no." You did good by saving the emails and all, good habit to be in. If it turns out you are completely dissatisfied, using PayPal should give you some ground to stand on for asking for "more than a few bucks" or else returning it. Barring any major surprises though, that all should not be necessary. Congrats and good luck with cleaning it up

Thanks for the advice. The smell isn't strong, but I was more concerned it smelled that way because of too much moisture for a prolonged period, and any damage the guitar itself might get from that. I've been chasing a white one for a few years, so yes, they are rare indeed. I knew it had cosmetic issues, I should have asked for better pix, but overall, one ding or 5 makes little difference to me, as long as there is no structural damage. I'm cool with the scars. I'm mostly concerned with the neck bow. I'm hoping it's just a simple truss rod adjustment. Should be, since the neck isn't twisted at all. At least the truss rod cover is on the right way!
Based on the strings that were on it, the pickup heights, the bridge setting... I think the last owner just doesn't know anything about guitars or guitar maintenance, and it just needs someone (me) to put it all right again.
The real test is once I've done the work, and when I plug it in. Haven't gone down down the electronics road yet. Couple of hours more at work then I can go home and get busy!

Very cool to find one in white. Seems like they only come up a couple of times a year. Congrats

I'm curious about the pickups and covers (or lack of covers).

Frankly, this is the kind of condition I'm always looking for. Banged up but all original, give it a spa treatment and a perfect setup and it will transform into a loyal and loving companion. Like a mutt rescued from the shelter ... they love you more than those spoiled dogs that have no idea tough life can be ...

By the way, this white guild was in nearly identical condition as your new S-100:

Progress report: Like Los Angeles said, I gave it the "spa treatment" (haha I like that) and it's a keeper. Mostly it was just really grimy. The previous owner must be a mechanic or wildcatter or something who never washed his hands. Black goo in crevasses, scratches and dings. The poor "satin neck" sanding was a real bummer, but I took some 600 wet/dry to it and did it right, so I'm cool with it. He had used probably 220 grit and you could feel it. Just dumb. I re-glued all the binding that was coming off with Titebond, oiled the thirsty fretboard, polished the frets, reset the tuners which were all at slightly different angles, corrected the selector and phase switches to straight up and down, tightened everything up. The neck was straight, gratefully, so I just had to clean up the nut, restring with 10's, and did a full setup. Plugged her in and it plays and sounds great! The bridge is close to bottomed out, but still a little play in it. One tone knob is missing the shield insert, so I'll be on the look out for one (hint hint), and I want to put pickup covers on the Duncans. That's just my preference. I'm thinking that I'm going to ask for at least 50 bucks back from the seller. He didn't disclose the binding separation nor the crappy neck sanding. Overall it looks pretty good now. She's a scarred but proud warrior, ready to rock. I ran out of time to get photos, so I'll get to that tonight. Oh, and the case in really good shape, just musty smelling, so I put some fabric softener sheets inside overnight and it's better. A couple more days and a wipe down of the exterior should cure it.

Get a bottle of "fabreeze", give the interior a once-over and leave the case open in direct sunlight for a few hours. the smell will be 95% gone.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention... It also bears the distinction of having serial number FB000378, making it the last ‘96 made, at least according to the charts. They finished the year with a good one!

I think this has been answered elsewhere, but I'd like to be sure: standard duncan humbucker with covers will work, correct? The 1.95" (48.9mm) ones?

And it is now complete. Seller refunded me 50 bucks for the un-mentioned issues. Happy days!
